Question about 2001 Cadillac Sts

Over heating, have changed the thermas stat, fixed cooling fan, dont see any leaks, still it runs hot after a few miles of driving.

Try undoing the highest hot hose when the car is hot to expel any air in system.

Overheating when I sit idle.


Over heating the engine is a serious concern. With the hood raised you should hear the motorized fan turn on just behind the radiator as the engine requires additional cooling.. If you look in from the rear of the radiator you should see the fan blades.

This electric powered motor operates on a thermostat and when the engine temperature rises this fan should come on. I'm assuming from your description that when driving and air is flowing through the radiator as the car travels the engine is nor overheating.

Check fan motor thermostat, check fan motor and check wiring.

What type fan is your car running, is it electrical or fan belt driven.

If you have a problem with the Radiator being clogged, you can tell by checking for cold spots on the rad, also the top hose will be hotter than the bottom, both should be same temp. If electrical fans both should be on when the AC is on. If fan driven Viscous filled clutch type, with the engine at operating temperature, engines stopped; the fan blade when spinned by hand should spin but stop rotating very quickly, if it seem to free heel for a longer period you may need a fan clutch.. Just throwing this out there need more info.. Water pump? squeezing the top rad hose you should feel water circulating, a surging effect as the water try to expand the restriction. Thermostat is opening and allowing water to register hot on your instruments. Blown head gasket? test for combustion gasses in the radiator. They sell a test kit. Since your overheating is intermitting and If you have a belt driven fan I would change out the fan clutch..

Could be a clogged heater-core, or it could be a bad thermostat. Waterpumps hardly ever fail, unless it is leaking. The pump mechanism is direct-drive, so if it is turning, it is working...
Try checking the thermostat in a pan of water, on the stove, with a thermometer to see when (IF) it opens. If it's NOT the thermostat try flushing the heater-core (buy a kit and use a garden hose).

Engine over heats


Check for collapsed radiator hose first.

Do the cooling fans come on? If not, check fuse, relay and if still no function- fan thermostat switch.

If fans do come on, replace water pump.

My 04 dodge 1500 keeps over heating when i turn the ac on or when im going up hills "why"


under maximium load your cooling system is struggling asuming you have an automatic transmission,it is cooled through the radiator,when running the ac your condenser is hot,right in front of the radiator,if your not leaking,and your anti-freeze looks bright green an clean ,and the fan or fans are working ,first change the thermostat,cheapest,remove the serpintine belt and inspect the water pump pulley,spin it by hand,try to tip it forward and backward,to see if it wobbles,it should spin smooth and quiet,if it has a chattering or growling feel,or the pulley wobbles change the pump,the only thing left is the radiator ,make sure that debri or something isnt stuck in front of it a small piece of paper is enough to restrict airflow,inspect the core is it turning green and the fins are falling out ,is the plastic shroud intact around it, lots of things could be going on ,the transmission could be low on fluid,and running hot,causing the excessive load on the radiator,disregaurd this if you have a manual.need more info to pinpoint further,hope this helps

My VW Cabrio is overheating after 1-2 miles. Coolant in recovery tank is boiling by this time and making bubbling noises. Someone changed radiator hoses, flange, some housing. They are saying that radiator...



Run the engine and look at the header tank , is there lots of air bubbles coming back out of the water if is then the head gasket may have split and that is down to either a can of Radweld or a strip down repair

If the radiator is not uniformly hot them I would go for that as your problem

Normal operation is that the engine starts the thermostat is closed , engine block heats up and opens water starts to circulate around the block

So to check that you need to fill the radiator with cold water run it for a few minutes check the bottom hose it should be cold

The stat opens and the bottom hose should get hot as the water from the block is pumped into the radiator for cooling.

The radiator should get hot all over and the cooling fan should kick in when the sensor hits the over limit stop.

If that does not happen then get someone to remove the stat altogether (It is only there to get the engine block warm quickly in cold regions )

In which case the bottom hose should go from cold to warm to hot

Overheating problems in a 2006 Pontiac Torrent


Another possible cause is your coolant sensor. if the sensor goes bad, it will drip coolant but won't notice it because it just seeps down the engine components. Most people don't even realize that there is such a sensor. it will send a faulty reading that its overheating when the coolant level is fine and when enough coolant does seep out it will still say its overheating because it is at that point. I would definitely look into checking your coolant sensor as the cause since it's so hard to even see that it is leaking and its super easy to take out and replace. hope that helps if you're still having problems
