Question about 2003 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

My van had 2-3 separate episodes approximately 2 months ago in which the power steering went out for around 20-30 seconds. Usually happened when backing up and turning the wheel at a sharp angle. Quoted $600 to fix power steering. No recurrence since. What do you think the problem is? I'm planning a 400 mile trip for a vacation and trying to decide whether it is OK to drive this van.

There is a problem related to the PS pump that causes it to quit working for short periods of time, this makes the steering wheel very hard, making you think the pump is low on fluid or defective. happens more often when parking the vehicle or making sharp turns at low speed.
This problem can be cause by.:
PS fluid low. Bent, restricted PS fluid line PS fluid cooler air flow restricted. (fluid gets too hot and starts making air bubbles) that make PS Pump to act like it is out of fluid.. Reservoir tank screen/filter clogged. The mesh of which the filter is made out of is very fine so It does not take much for this filter to clog up.
Check lines for kinks, bangs and bending, PS fluid cooler for obstructions and dirt and reservoir tank fluid level, if they look OK, flush the system, replace reservoir tank and add new PS fluid.. This fixes the problem most of the time.
Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this post!!

Hi all.I have asked this question

The Meriva has a known fault with the electronic power steering rack which causes some weird other issues.
The replacement part and labour is expensive - I had one and the price in the UK was around £1200 for the repair.
Thankfully we had a media push in this country and the pressure made General Motors (Vauxhall/Opel/Chevrolet) do the fix for free, try calling your nearest dealer and see if they'll do this for you Meriva 02 09 Power Steering Problems

If your van starts about 3 times. Immediately stops 3 times. Then doesn't start. You have a bad solder in your dash. Usually, the way to test is this is to spank the dash briskly. This seems to rejoin the bad solder and your Van with start. If this does the trick, take it to your repair person. Tell him to take out the instrument cluster and resolder the connections. This will fix it. We have fixed 2 or three vans the same way.

This sounds like a power brake motor problem. If it happened right after you got that work done I would take it back there and see what they have to say. I have heard of some of these symptoms coming from air in the brake lines. If it is the brake motor it might just be coincidence that it started happening after that work got done.

Power steering problem

If the belt is loose, that would definitely give you that screech you are hearing...does the sound of the screech vary with the engine speed (in idle)? No matter...the belt should be tight enough that if you press down on the belt, it should move no more than about 1/8 of an inch...another thing you could do is get an aerosol spray called Belt Quiet (I think that's what it's name is), you can pick it up at any autoparts store; what that stuff does is lubricates the belt and pulley to reduce unwanted friction which could also be causing your screech.

As for the power steering pump, unless it was complete,ly dry, there is no need to bleed the pump. Cheers!

Serpentine Belt and pulley were replaced. Drove

High moisture with cheap belts would be a start. 2nd possibility is you have a bearing in an accesory drying out. Check water pump pully first with the screwdriver methode. Do not place on a moving part!!!
