Question about 2004 Ford Explorer
You need to narrow down the problem first because the light can mean countless things. If you go to most auto parts stores they will either do a diagnostic on your car or they loan you the machine that you can use right there. Run the test on your vehicle and find out the codes. If they don't tell you what the code or codes mean then come back on here and I or somebody else can help you figure it out. Hope that was helpful.

I have the same car and if the gas cap is loos for any reason the service engine light will come on so check that. If it is it will turn off in a few days after you tighten it.

if it truly set code for "loose fuel cap" or po455 large leak, then tightening the cap and driving a couple days should reset on its own. if not then get it checked for free at autozone and report back with code # and can help from there. they'll ck for free but are not allowed to reset.

you have to have a code reader or you can take to your local parts store(autozone) and they will scan and clear for free

It is not recomended to disconnect the battery and turn the light switch or horn or anything else on in order to clear codes stored in memory because any settings stored in the computer may be lost too.Go to autozone and rent the scanner to do it yourself. It is very easy, just connect the scanner to the connector located below the dashboard, turn the ignition on but not the engine and follow the prompts then when it says: clear codes?hit yes or enter and that is it.This is the safest way to do it.

You can simply disconnect the battery for a short period then reconnect. If you have a problem it will return. Better to go to an auto zone store they will read the code and reset. This is a free service. Many other auto parts store have the same service.
