Hi!!
The handle may be broken or latching rods may have come loose. To fix it, remove tali gate cover screws to gain access to latching mechanism hardware, there should be two rods going the both ends of the gate hooked to the handle, when they are pulled together they release the latching mechanism.
A common problem is that the release handle mechanism or the handle itself breaks. Replacement parts can be bought at your local Autoparts store . Take the broken part with you to make sure to get the exact replacement.
Good Luck!!

Check this procedure to repair and installation...

Moldings & Panels - Removal & Installation
If you're going to remove major pieces of interior trim, it's best to heat the interior of the truck first; this makes the plastic soften slightly and will help prevent possible breakage.

Many of the attaching screws and pins are hidden by plugs, caps, etc. or are the attaching point for clips or brackets. The plugs and caps can be removed with light prying action. Don't force anything-if the trim isn't coming out, it's because you've missed a screw or clip somewhere. Most attaching hardware is located around the perimeter or near the center of the piece. Don't forget to reinstall the ornamental plug or cap that hides the screw when the part is back in place.

Also, some moldings cannot be removed without first removing the adjacent molding. It may seem like more work than necessary, but if you force something that isn't meant to come out yet, something is bound to break.

Door Panel

  1. Open the window.
  2. Unscrew the door lock knob.
  3. On Explorer/Mountaineer, remove the 2 screws retaining the trim panel located above the door handle.
  4. On Ranger, remove the two screws in the armrest and remove it.
  5. If equipped with manual window crank handles, pull off the handle cover, then remove the attaching screw.
  6. Remove the trim cup behind (Explorer/Mountaineer) or around (Ranger) the door handle using a small prying tool. Retention nibs will flex for ease of removal.
  7. If equipped with power accessories, use the notch at the lower end of the plate and pry the plate off. Remove the plate from the trim panel and pull the wiring harness from behind the panel. Disconnect the harness from the switches.
  8. Remove any retaining screws uncovered by the removed trim pieces.
  9. Using a flat wood spatula, insert it carefully behind the panel and slide it along to find the push-pins. When you encounter a pin, pry the pin outward. Do this until all the pins are out. NEVER PULL ON THE PANEL TO REMOVE THE PINS!
  10. Lift slightly to disengage the panel from the flange at the top of the door.
  11. Disconnect the door courtesy lamp and remove the panel completely. Replace any damaged or bent attaching clips.
  12. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Door Lock Cylinder (Side Doors And Tailgate)
  1. Open the window.
  2. Remove the trim panel and watershield.
  3. Disconnect the actuating rod from the lock control link clip.
  4. Slide the retainer away from the lock cylinder.
  5. Remove the cylinder from the door.
  6. Use a new gasket when installing to ensure a watertight fit.
  7. Lubricate the cylinder with suitable oil recommended for this application.

Hope this helps to solve it.

The handle broke off on my 2003 jeep grand cherokee laredo liftgate. how can i open it now? i can't find anything on the inside in the back and my tail light is out.

You will need to remove the interior panle from the loft gate to axess the latch
there is 4 screws along the bottom of the panle to remove then carfuly pull the panle away from the lift gate there is plastic clips that hold the panle to the gate these may need to be replaced when re installing the panle they can be purchased at the jeep dealer.
now look into the lift gate and you will see where the handle rod conects to the latch lift on this rod and the gate will open
to replace the handle remove the 2 10 mm bolts and disconect the rod from the latch install the new handle and rod to the latch install the 2 10 mm bolts. install the panle and 4 screws
this should cover it

The rear gate latch is stuck in the closed position with the gate in the open position not allowing the gate to lock into position

It sounds like a rod going to the latch came off. You can try to pry the latch to the open position while the outside handle is in the pull to open position at the same time. If that does not work the rod indeed came off inside to the latch or handle area

1992 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tailgate wont latch

latches for this are on the sides. The are connected by the handle in the middle of the gate. Latches are either stuck open (dry or frozen open) or stuck closed and you are banging on them when trying to close and "latch" gate. Get a screwdriver and while pulling up on tailgate handle make sure latches(on gate) are open to engage "striker bolt". If they are spray them liberally with WD40 or silicone SPRAY. latch and open several times to let lubricant attack rusted area on mechanism.

If latches won't open they may be stuck closed and won't open because cable going from middle handle to that side or both sides is disconnected. Does tailgate have star shaped bolts on "inside-bed-when-closed" side? If so you will need to spray these with WD40 and let set then get a star torques bit and remove them to access middle handle actuator.

Tail gate wont stay closed -latches not catching

I had this problem with my 2004 for the past year. Then this past week end it stopped latching all together. I found on mine the handle mechinism froze up. All the wd40 I tried did not help. I had to replace the handle. one thing I saw that could be a problem if it has happened since owning is if the connecting rods that go from the handle to the side latches are not adjusted right. they clip into the handle mechanism and if they were cannected with latch down they may not move enough to allow latch to lock completely.

I know this sounds silly, but is the latch locked? If I lock mine, the latch will lift but the gate won't open.
