I have a 89 geo metro, 1 liter,3 cyl. I was driving it and shut it off and will not restart, I have done several things to check it , it has spark, the fuel pump and relay work and will deliver gas to the throttle body , if i hand manipulate the fuel pump relay, i change the electronic control module, check all the fuses, I have done everything I can think of , but it will not start, can anyone help me larry lpsretired@hotmail.com

Hello expert , this is kind of lengthy, but i will try and answer all your questions, thank you

    1. When it cranks ikt still will not start even if I hand manipulate the fuel pump relay, that at least puts fuel to the throttle body. But the injector still will not oopen to let fuel enter the throat of the throttle body , so the engine will run on its own .

[Manipulating the relay] I am using a good relay that I have taken the protective cover off . I am using to test the fuel system , to see if the fuel pump and filter will deliver gas to the throttle body. That system works great , but does not work automatically from the ecm . Whenthe engine is running Ok the relay work automatically from the ecm.

When the key is truned on the relay will not deliver fuel to the throttle body.

When the starter is engaged the spark is fine, fuel pump is not working [only when I close the relay manually. The still will not start and run on it own.

The last tilme I drove the car it was runing fine. But I stopped about after 15 minutes of driving just to check things under the hood , the engine was idling OK but started idling slower and slower and quit running. I could not restart it , I had to hitch a ride home and good my pickup and trailer and drove 14 miles to bring my car home .

Like i said previously I have put in a used ecm and I changed the distributor , I have tested many things , I still can not get to run , unless I pour a few teaspoons of gas in the top of the throttle body , it will for a few seconds and die. please help me if you can i am at a loss larry lpsretired 541 372 8056

hi again, The only other relay it the main EPI relay , I have switch them around and traded relays back and forth , i come up with the same problem. the EPI relay has to switch on before the fuel pump can turn on.

When the ignition switch is turned on , it puts 12 volts to the solenoid side of the pump relay directly, the other side of the relay is the switch side , the 12 volts for fuel pump comes from the EPI relay. When the key is in the ON position , the EPI relay does work and there is 12 volts to the fuel pump side of the fuel pump relay. What i have found out is that the solenoid part of the fuel relay is controled by the ground side which is wired back into the Electronic control module .

Before I test drove the car on the 15 minute , I exchanged the ECM just to see if one of the two ECM I have was bad. But they both performed perfectly. I am trying to find out why the car will not run , I keep thinking it is the Ecm, because it controls the ground on the pump relay. I have been to several shops and one said it might be the distributor, one said it is the oil pressure switch.

The distributor has fantastic spark , it will jump a gap of more than an inch, it has a a very hot coil. I looked inside the distributor it has 2 pickup sensors, so it must fire twice.

I hope you can come up with some anwser , before i pull my hair out , [lol i am bald] larry

In addenum If I can not use the exiting electronics in this cars , I have a parts car in my back yard that is a few years newer , I have a different part number ECM but it will not work because the plug ins are different . I have thought ripping out the wiring out of the parts cars and transplanting them into my 89 geo , they have the same engine and body. That would up date the 89 geo , exchange the intake manifold , oil sensor and temperature , and so on. larry

    good morning expert

Well it seems i have come up to another dead end. The ground wire for the trigger side of the fuel pump relay is in good condition all the way to the ECM . I do not want to go into the ECM that is where my expertness ends . I know nothing about electronics. basic wiring , i can trace circuts i know how to use and ohm meter and a volt meter , i used to install water pumps down wells for domestic water systems , I can wire my own house , i can plumb a house, i used to go plumbing contractor.

I think what i might do is return the ecm i got from a autorecylcing business and get my 37 dollars andthe may be up grade by removing the ecm and wiring and intake manifold and sensor fromanother car and install it in my 89 geo. i have been fighting this thing untill i am blue in the face.

Unless you got some other ideas i can try. larry lpsretired@hotmail.com ps

Other wise can I get my 12 dollars back . I received and email from you guys about a 15% discount and the bill would be 5 dollars and i have paid 12 dollars. Please help me if you can.

Hi!!
You are saying that it cranks up but do not want to start right??
What do you mean hand manipulating the fuel pump relay??
Does it delivery fuel when ignition key is turn ON??
So the starter works, spark is fine, fuel pump is delivering..
Describe what happened last time you drove the car please.

Ok, so we have the fuel pump working applying current to it, the ignition key does not activate the relay at all,

Using the original Fuel Pump relay have someone turn the key to the ON position while you try to hear the fuel pump running for 2 seconds if not, touch the relay when he key is turned ON to see if you can feel and/or hear a click., if no click, switch relay with the AC or Fan if they have the same part number in them and perform the same test.

I have an idea of what could be the problem but I just want to discard other possibilities. so have a little patience buddy. Will get it running!!!

    Keep me posted.

    Good Morning!!
Check the wiring diagram that applies to you vehicle (fig 33-44). look for the fuel delivery circuit to see how the ground signal gets to the fuel pump relay and trace the wire. I believe that is where your problem is. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairi...

Additionally, you can visit this links to gather additional info about your vehicle.

Tis is how to check the ignition module

Ignition timing for 1991 Pontiac Firefly or 1991 Chevrolet Sprint or 1991 Geo Metro

for 1991 geo metro 1.0 liter 3 cyl engine the timing is 6 degrees before top dead center. you will need a tachometer because the rpm must be 800 when you set the timing. also you will need to disconnect the vacuum advance to the distributor, and plug the hose to avoid a vacuum leak. (alternate method is to pinch the vacuum advance hose going to the distributor while you are setting the timing) Good Luck!

I'm replacing the timing belt on a Geo Metro, 3 cyl 1 liter, and the camshaft moved, How do I reset the timing?

you should have 3 gears that hve a mark on them. line them up with each other, then you need to get a timing light, checker and auto zone rent them, and you loosen the 2 bolts on the distributor not the cap but the whole unit. then turn it as you look at where the light is flashing your crank marker and there is markers on your cover for where it is suppost to be
