FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason, it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. In order to start and run an engine needs: -
A good cranking speed.
The correct amount of fuel delivered into the combustion chamber at the right time,
Good compression.
A spark sufficient to ignite the mixture at the right time.

An engine that doesn't start has at least one requirement missing and only systematic checks will reveal which.

Considering the age of the car I wouldn't be surprised if the injector spray patterns are bad and I suggest you begin there.

This 4.3 V6 is just a 350 V8 with 2 cylinders missing and even a V8 trans will fit/interchange physically being the same bolt pattern and size. If it's the same shift pattern and both transmissions are overdrive transmissions, yes, it will interchange. If it's GM, it'll swap. From 1988 the automatic transmissions have a multi bolt pattern and Pontiac, Caddy, Olds and Chevy, all will bolt up.

A more detailed problem description would yield you a more specific/helpful answer.

I'd suspect dirty fuel injectors if your tune-up is recent. A clean fuel injector sprays a fuel pattern into the fuel delivery system. A dirty injector will only squirt the fuel thereby causing an improper spray pattern causing a misfire at first then worsening if ignored.

Try to find a pattern when this happen,Like you hit the same bump in the bridge,Or you left off the gas at that spot,or was using your clutch when it happened.How fast you were going or was the engine at an idle.Computers in cars are not affected by any outside source of radio or electric waves.They are hard wired to only sensors on your cars engine. When you can find a pattern then you can tell your mechanic when it does this. That way your not paying for hit and miss repairs.

While idling, the engine sputters. check engine light on, reading misfire in cylinder four. Have replaced both coils, all wires, and all plugs. Still no help. I've come to a dead end. Anybody with ideas?.
Hi, this may be a dirty injector. Try putting some injector cleaner in the gas tank to see if that will clear it up. If not, you may need to pull up the fuel rail and check the injector flow pattern.

on an 86 there is a plug on the engine harness that gets corroded and may be coming apart if there was engine work done its up near the injector harness clean it up and plug it in tight hope this helps

  • does the engine miss? bumps is a rythmic pattern?
  • an engine miss will appear to diminish at higher rpm due to centrifical force.
  • other possible problem broken or flat motor mount.
  • is the idle rough in reverse?
  • if not
  • open hood
  • start engine
  • Left foot on brake (hard)
  • start engine
  • watch engine as you select drive
  • still holding brake with left foot / throttle gas with right foot
  • does engine dramatically move?
  • if so replace motor mount on offending side
  • if not possible engine miss or transmission problems

its soaking air somewere around the manifold make sure you thigten the bolts on the wight pattern if yoou dont know the pattern start from te center to the outside or reset the computer just unhooked the negative cable from the batery for 5 minutes,
