Ford Ka 2003 - Just had the head gasket and temperature gauge replaced about 2 weeks ago. When driving into the car park this morning i noticed steam and water coming from my bonnet (headlamp on the passenger side steamed up too)?! Those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system tend to go hard and split if they are over 5 years old, allowing coolant loss which could cause your problem. Have them checked as well as making sure any other hoses and clamps are in good condition.

I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire that runs hot and then is fine for a couple weeks . have put it in the shop several time .Any ideas?

Difficult...

Running hot would come down to a blocked radiator, a collapsed hose, a faulty temperature sensor or a cylinder head/gasket problem.

it could also be the gauge or even a bad earth on a temperature sensor.

Does your car exhibit any signs of overheating .. steam .. boiling radiator ... rough running?

It's strange that it runs fine for a couple of weeks and then runs hot. To me that suggests a temperature sensor/thermostat problem coupled with the outside air temperature.

What did the workshop suggest?

Temperature gauge goes up and don when I am driving, but sits on halfway when my car is running and sitting still, what could be going on?

Have your coolant cap checked. If it is bad it won't hold pressure and it will allow coolant to leak out.

take the spark plugs out and fill the water up. turn over the engine. see what comes out of the spark plug holes. should just be fuel. smell. you will need some one to turn the engine over and have good charge in the battery. fill the water to the top so it is level. if you see the water go down when the engine is turning. then it could be air or a leak in the head gasket.

could possibly be a head gasket problem. check the oil and make sure the coolant is not mixing with the oil... also thick white smoke out the tailpipe is a good indicator of a bad head gasket

My temp gauge is going to the red , I turn my heater on and it does go down somewhat . Motor doesn't really seam that hot but might be . Thanks

It sounds like the cooling fan is not working, with the motor off look in front of the motor and there is a fan or 2, check the wiring and plugs, some times they corrode and can be cleaned with alloy wheel cleaner then water then spray oil in them otherwise the fuses and the thermo switch need checking.
