Question about 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Loosen power steering pump and pulley and can't get the pump to shift enough to get the belt off and new one on. should be a simple thing

Toyota usually have two bolts on their accessory belt tensioners, one is for adjustment and on is to lock it down. make sure you losen the lock down bolt first then unscew the long adjusting bolt all the way.
if it is a four cylinder look at the idler pulley to the left of the power steering pump assembly, the tensioner is a part of that pulley not the power steering pump bracket. i hope this helps

Replace power steering belt


You should have a serpentine belt (one continuous multi-grooved belt) on that model in which case the easiest way is to get (or borrow) the special tool (a long bar with a place to install a socket) to back the tensioner off enough to slip the belt off one of the pulleys. Install in the reverse order using the wrench back the tensioner pulley back enough to get the belt over the last pulley then release the tensioner - it will automatically provide the proper tension. If it a single V-belt then look for a bolt or bolts you can loosen and slide the power steering pump toward the motor and remove the old belt then install the new one, carefully pry the pump back into place and tighten the bolt(s). This should work on most vehicles.

How to replace the power steering belt on a 4g13



ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.4L Engines

  1. Loosen the alternator support nut.
  2. Loosen the adjuster lock bolt.
  3. Rotate the adjuster bolt counter clockwise to release the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the adjuster bolt clockwise until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjuster lock bolt and the alternator support nut.

  1. Remove the alternator belt as described above.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump adjusting bolts.
  3. Remove the power steering pump fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  4. Rotate the pump toward the engine and remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the pump until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjusting bolts on the pump.
  4. Tighten the fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  5. Install the alternator belt.

A/C COMPRESSOR BELT
  1. Loosen the tension pulley and remove the belt.
  2. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

ALTERNATOR AND A/C COMPRESSOR

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front undercover.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley fixing nut and relieve the tension on the belt by turning the adjusting bolt.
  3. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the crankshaft and alternator pulleys.
  2. Using the adjusting bolt on the tensioner, tighten the belt to the desired tension.
  3. Tighten the fixing nut to hold the adjustment.
  4. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle to the floor.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

POWER STEERING BELT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the undercover.
  2. Remove the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  3. Lower the vehicle and remove the cruise control pump link assembly.
  4. Place the power steering hose under the oil reservoir.
  5. Loosen the tension pulley fixing bolts and remove the power steering pump drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump drive belt.
  2. Insert an extension bar or equivalent into the opening at the end of the tension pulley bracket and pivot the pulley to apply tension to the belt.
  3. Tighten the fixing bolts.
  4. Raise the vehicle and install the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  5. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

How to remove and install the power steering pump?


Power steering pumps require one special tool. for you ,you ll need the GM pulley puller $29 at northern or autozone. you cant get the pump out of the bracket without removing the pulley. after you have the right tools its gravy . loosen the belt remove the pulley ,pump. install the new pump ,use the tool to press the pulley back on and reinstall the belt. Now you have to bleed the air out and that can be messy. leave the filler lid off after putting in new fluid and turn the wheel from lock to lock several times. if you didnt let any air in the lines during your repair you should be good to go. Its not as simple as it sounds. Be ready for some cussing . pressure wash your engine and put a large drip pan under the car before you start and at least youve saved some grief . have some fun, if you screw up the worst thing is you tow your car to the shop. If you get it right thats what its all about.

On 3.7L/4.7L engines, the tensioner is equipped with an indexing tang on back of tensioner and an indexing stop on tensioner housing. If a new belt is being installed, tang must be within approximately 24 mm (.94 inches) of indexing stop. Belt is considered new if it has been used 15 minutes or less.
If the above specification cannot be met, check for:
  • The wrong belt being installed (incorrect length/ width)
  • Worn bearings on an engine accessory (A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator)
  • A pulley on an engine accessory being loose
  • Misalignment of an engine accessory
  • Belt incorrectly routed.

BELT ADJUSTMENT
MANUAL BELT TENSIONER
Loosen rear mounting bolts of idler pulley or power steering pump (if equipped). Loosen power steering pivot
bolt and lock nut (if equipped). Turn adjusting bolt to tighten belt to specification. See BELT ADJUSTMENT
SPECIFICATIONS
table. Tighten bolts and lock nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m). For serpentine belt routing, see
For the routing just draw a picture befor romoving the belt. There are 4 different routings and I don't have enough info for yours. Without the proper tool the adjustment spec won't do you any good so before you take off the old belt get a feel of how thight it is and try to match the new one. best thing to do it make it loose enough so it squals when turning the steering
wheel to the extream or stop then tighten the belt little at a time till it doesn't squeal then just go a little bit more. If the belt is too tight it will wear out bearings in water pump,Alt, pullys ect. If its too losse it will squeal and wear out the belt so take your time on the adjustment.

I need to replace my 2007 Honda Odyssey Power Sterring Pump? How hard is this and would it be better for me to take it to someone to have it done?


Not that bad to do, loosen nut on center of pulley before removing belt, this way it will hold pulley while loosening nut, after that remove belt, remove both power steering hoses, now remove pulley and both mounting bolt to power steering pump, install new pump in reverse order.

Lost my alternator belt on my 1994 isuzu rodeo. It's situated behind 2 other belts. Where do I begin with loosening things to get the other belts out of the way so I can install the new alternator belt?...

tyre lever or long thin bar for levering out alternator
there are 2, 14mm bolts in front bracket of power steering pump loosen a couple of turns only then loosen stud nut at rear of power steering pump then you can move pump in/out by turning 14mm long bolt you see thread for just left of power steering pump pulley
then the alternator is a 12 or some times 13mm bolt at top front section to loosen then lever in and out, must hold tension on lever with belt on while doing this up (2nd person to hold lever)

I cant remove the power steering belt on my 1997 hyundai accent. the belt is on the power steering pulley and the water pump pulley


The power steering pump has an adjustment for tension. You need to be able to swing the pump inwards to loosen the tension. If you look at the pump from the front you should see a hinge bolt, that's closest to the engine. That merely needs to be loosened up. The outer one is for tension, you loosen that and sometimes you have to remove it completely. When you install the new belt be careful of what you use to re-tension it; you can't use a something that will dent or bend the pump housing, you'll ruin it. Use some thing that distributes the force over a large area.

Can't get A/C belt around pulleys on my 01 Chevy Tracker 2.5 V6



Removal & Installation

1.6L Engine
A/C Compressor Belt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  3. Pivot the A/C compressor towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor, the power steering (if equipped), and the crankshaft pulleys.
  2. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
  3. Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 13-20 f t. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator Belt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the power steering pump and the A/C compressor drive belt.
  3. Loosen the generator mounting bolts.
  4. Pivot the generator towards the engine and remove the accessory drive belt.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the generator drive belt on the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the alternator drive belt to obtain 6-8 mm (0.24-0.32 in) deflection for a used belt or 5-6 mm (0.20-0.24 in) deflection for a new belt.
  3. Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  4. Install the power steering and the A/C compressor drive belt.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Power Steering Pump Belt
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts.
  3. Pivot the power steering pump towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the power steering pump drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the power steering pump drive belt on the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulleys.
  2. Adjust the power steering pump drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
  3. Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
