Question about 1988 Buick Regal

1 Answer

The fuel gauge on my '88 Buick Regal limited is not working. I'm not sure where I should start looking, in the dash console area or the fuel tank itself. Any advice as to how to go about repairing it?

It sounds like a problem with the fuel gauge sender unit in the fuel tank which is has worn out and gone open circuit and needs replacing.

2000 buick regal 3.8 fuel guage not working properly what to do

Well it could be the sending unit in the fuel take or it could be the gauge in the dash ! I had a Cadillac Seville I was checking at the dealer I worked at , hooked up the tester an tested the gauge . The gauge worked fine so I pulled the fuel tank an put in a new sending unit. It work fine so I sent the vehicle on home , two days later it was back for the same problem . I pulled the tank again an the fuel pump Assemble an noticed the baffle in the bottom of the tank had come lose wedged under the float arm of the sending unit ! That's what was wrong , it wouldn't go below half a tank . I 'm not saying this is your problem because this was back in the 80's an they used metal fuel tanks ! Yours is more then likely plastic !

Now a days you can hook - up a scan tool an check it !
  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the fuel level parameter in the Powertrain Control Module data list.
Does the scan tool indicate that the fuel level parameter is within the specified range?
3%-98%
Hope this helps you out !

1992 regal limited 3.8 litre fuel gauge reads 3/4 tank started and was driving great. About ten minutes later, on flat ground, engine just makes a pop noise like a quick single backfire. engine died...

What ever you do, do not, I repeat do not take the lower radiator hose out of the car. This breaks
the VATS circuit and you will never get you car started. You will need to by a new VATS program box for up under the dash. This will cost tons. Radiator hose distributes 50mhz wave signal to the
VATS box. Removing this hose with short circuit the VATS and passkey and passkey II systems.

Otherwise, sheck you battery for 12 volts and 600 amp rating.

Gas hand stop working in my 1983 Buick Regal....

This problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit (senses the level of the fuel in the gas tank), the gas gauge sending unit is located inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to replace the gas gauge sending unit.

How do I remove the gas tank on my 1992 Buick Regal Gran Sport?

Hi Friend; To remove your Fuel Tank, Take out all the Fuel in Tank or Drive it Out if Possible.
1) Open the Cover Where you put your Gas in,you'll see a Couple 2-3 Screws Remove them ,Then Under the Back of your car you'll see your Fuel Tank, And you'll Also see 2-Metal Straps 1-on each side,These Straps are whats holding your Tank Up. Then Look for the 2-Bolts or Nuts ,You might want to Spray the 2 Nuts and The Threads Before Starting to Remove the Nuts.,As your removing the Nuts and your tank starts lowering .Look for any Wires or Hoses attached to your Fuel Tank. There will be wires for your Fuel Gauge Sending Unit which is inSide the Tank, Remove that wire, And Remove the Hose or Hoses.Re member Where the wires and Hoses came Off ,So you beable to Put them Back in Correct Place. To Put the Fuel Tank Back Simply Reverse the Removal Instrutions and you Should Not have any Problems. Please Let Me Know How my Solution Has Helped You. Thank And Good Luck, FROM d_hubbs

1999 buick when fuel gauge drops below 3/4 it is is not accurate

i dont know the specifics of a Regal, but usually, when a needle fluctuates too much, is because the float gauge in the gas tank is worn out, or its mount became loose. You cant see that effect on a full tank because the instrument needle and the float are pegged against the stop.

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.
