Question about Subaru Forester

1 Answer

My 2005 Forester's clutch was slipping badly and I took it to my mechanic to have it seen to. I bought the car ex Tasmanian Government at 21000 km and it has now done 60000. My mechanic has pulled the clutch out as it needs replacing, but has had great difficulty in finding the right kit. He said the clutch appears to have been modified before I got it. Eventually he managed to locate the right clutch, but it has to be brought in from interstate. The kit seems to be extremely expensive at about $900, as opposed to $300 for a standard clutch. What is the story with these fancy Subaru clutches and why do they seem to wear out so quickly? Susan

Honestly your paying to much. Take the time to get other quotes from other mechanics. Call the dealership with your vehicles vin# and have them quote you a price on the clutch kit and also get the part # for the clutch assembly they find you. Then call your local parts store with the dealer part # and see if they can cross reference it for something they can get. A clutch for a subaru shouldn't cost any more than 100-200. Sounds to me like you definitely need a new mechanic.

Thanks for that. Yes, we have been through all that with our mechanic whom we absolutely trust. Spent a whole day tracking down this particular kit. Local dealer is even more expensive!
We hoped you might know what modification might have been made to these vehicles, presumably by Subaru or its agents, when they were near new.
    Thanks again.

What is the interval for replacing a timing belt for a 2005 subaru forester

160,000 km major service. Anything over 150,000, think about getting it done, There's a set of bearing and the hydraulic tensioner (sometimes water pump) as well that should be done at the same time.

My 2003 Honda accord ex 4 cylinder will slip before hitting 3000 RPM and the transmission light is on any ideas of what's going on?

If it's a auto, the clutches are slipping. 1. it could be a shift solenoid 2. time for a transmission fluid flush 3. clutch packs are going out 4 torque converter going out. But with the problems I have seen with accords around that year, I would have to guess the clutch packs are going out

Clutch is bad is it hydraulic or not?

if you are having troubles getting the car into gears then it will be hydraulic it will either be your master or slave cylinder that will need to be replaced ,but if the clutch is slipping then it will be your clutch plate that needs to be replaced

When to change clutch plate of lancer2004. i mean after how many km

If you are a good clutch driver and carefully use it only to shift, it could easily go 250,000 km. If you hold the car in place on a hill using the clutch instead of the brake , expect to get maybe 60,000 km. Your driving technique (hot rodding versus gas miser) will dictate how long the clutch plate will last.

The mechanic tells me my clutch is slipping and needs rreplacing 85,000 km. How do I know if this is reliable info? I feel nothing

TEst for slipping clutch is travel about 30 mph. press clutch, shift to 3rd, rev engine pretty high and release clutch, at the time of clutch release, floor throttle. If the engine continues to race, clutch not grabbing porperly, if the clutch works properly, the engine will be slowed and engauged.
You can always get a 2nd opinon from another shop.

the 85,000 mile coutch worn out issue dependes entirely on driving habits of the operators.

2005 Forester X Engine Knock...big end bearing??? That much???

The lower end of your motor that has the knocking noise will sound like a deep penatrating thud. That will be the rear bearing for the crack shaft. You can find a cheaper place to have it repaired. $3,500 sounds more right to repair at most places

1998 Subaru Forester. At 180,000 I replaced the clutch, though it was not completely worn out. The new clutch felt rough when engaged, but I thought it would wear in. However, 6,000 miles later it was...

It's likely the clutch was not fitted perfectly straight, if it is set off center then the clutch will ALWAYS be slipping a little, Get hot and wear out prematurely.

Highlander 2005- VSC, ABS, park brake, tire pressure lights ON

I just bought a 2005 Highlander and the tire pressure light was on while I was test driving it. I asked the salesman to have the tire pressure checked and then it was fine....Until about 4 weeks after I purchased the vehicle, then the light came on again. This time I took it to a tire store and was told that it was simply the air pressure. When I asked why it would have gone on again so soon after I had the air pressure checked he told me that the change in air pressure from hot (over 100 degree weather) to cool (55 degree weather) might have done it. I got back into the car and the light was still on. I read the owner's manual and was able to reset the button (it's located under the left side of the steering wheel under the dash board and is clearly marked). The light promptly went out and I haven't seen it again for awhile. I hope that helps answer at least part of your problem.
