Probably becuse when selling the vehicle 4-wheel drive had a problem and the vacuum is what switches into 4-wheel mode. The lights would come on indicating 4x4 on.and without lifting vehicle off the ground you couldnt tell. An old trick of the trade. ?

Just to verify, have you removed the hubs and verified they move freely in either direction? and that the vaccuum diaprhagm inside the hub is working? By stating the vaccuum system, you do have AUTO hubs correct? I have fixed these problems many a times and found it is usually the auto hub assembly itself is not properly operating.

I can hear my transfer case shifting when i turn on my 4x4 but it is not working and there is no grinding nose or nothing like that.

if you can hear your transfer case switching then the problem isnt with your transfer case. their are three vaccuum lines that run out of your transfer case switch and if they are dry rotted or burnt in two from the exhaust manifold which is pretty common your four wheel drive will not engage your front differential. go to the auto parts store and buy about 15 feet of 7/32 vaccuum line and trace all the lines and replace them all. that will more than likely fix your problem.

How do I keep the vaccuum lines when installing an Edelbrock carb. on a 454 w/ dual air pumps.

Hi there,
So I am guessing that u r adding a new carb.
Before u take all vaccuum lines off, put white paper tape on them
an number them where they go.
When u get new carb look to see if it has all the ports that the
old carb did. Or why not??
Should not be that tuff though!

2004 F150 WILL NOT GO INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE

the first thing to do is to have the trany computer scanned for codes, the code will help alot in pin pointing your problem, you can try autozone they scan for free, these trucks that ive worked on.one had a bad 4wd transfer case selector motor, and another had bad front wheel locking hubs, these hubs are vaccum operated and go bad often the diafram rips on most of them.

The transfer case will not shift into 4 wheel hi or low 4 wheel drive auto with elect shift

I would suspect the vacuum disconnect motor or the vacuum solenoids for the disconnect motor ( or the vacuum lines ), but best to confirm
Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

With the engine running ( and wheel chocked, parking brake on ) have someone shift into 4WD, and watch the shift motor to see if it operates
It is on the front axle, looks like this

If the disconnect motor does not shift, you can check the vacuum on the lines with a vacuum gauge. Blue line is 4WD operation, pink line is 2WD operation.
The vacuum solenoids are on the firewall, and look like this

This is the block diagram for the ESOF vacuum operation of the disconnect motor.

This is assuming you have checked the fuses for the transfercase shift motor, and the vacuum solenoids.

My 89 chevy s-10 pickup 4 wheel drive doesnt work. the transfer case goes into gear but the front hubs seem like they dont lock in i was told it was a fuse or a vaccuum line but i have never heard of...

On the 1989 s10 it has a vacuum actuator that actually locks the front differential in ,you need to check that first, those go bad real often, and without it. There's no way it will lock in the axle, the transfer case will lock in ,but the front differential uses a actuator. It 's located under the battery tray and there is a cable towards the front of the differential. Id say the actuator cable has gone out, most parts stores can get you one ,that what goes wrong with those 99% of the time and it only takes about 5 minutes to change it out. Good luck but check the vacuum line to the actuator under the battery tray.

Front diff does not engage on my 95 chevy k1500 4x4 .the actuator is new.what do i do?

first make sure the new actuator is gettin' power. Do this by placing your hand on it while someone engages the 4-wheel drive. Then try cleaning your vacuum actuator valve and vaccuum lines leading up to it for possible holes.

Need vacuum diagram for 4-wheel drive

the 4x4 don't use vacuum. the front is auto lock when the transfer is engauged with the button. if the light don't which when pressed into 4hi or 4low. the motor on the transfer case maybe hung up. they have to be used at least 4 times a year not to go bad. the motor is on the back side of the transfer case. best of luck.
