I assume you have checked the cooling system to ensure that first that it is full and second that there are no leaks. Those pesky little bypass hoses tend to go hard and split if they are over 5 years old, allowing coolant loss. The over heating could also be caused by a clogged radiator.

Water pump replacement

Hello,
There is a website call club3g.
It is basically a forum for people that own 3g mitsubishi eclipse. I'm not sure which engine is in the 2000 montero but there will most likely be a step by step walk through on how to replace a water pump. Most of the solutions there have detailed pictures and good explainations.
Granted this is a forum so you will get good and bad info. Once you get to the site, go to the search bar and put in your engine size(liter) and water pump.
Example- (3.8 water pump)

Did you bleed the system and replace any lost coolant? Is the system also clean?

Air and other blockages in the line will cause that problem.

I replaced the thermosta and the car is still overheating

it sounds like either the water pump is going out or take radiator cap off and look inside to see if tubes inside radiator are clogged if so you need to have it rodded out or replaced

does the car overheat at idle or travelling down the road? if the thermostat was not changed, thats first step. checking it is replacing it. possibly air-bound. then i would suspect a headgasket problem.

Want to find and replace water pump.

If your water pump isn't leaking or making a lot of noise (when the bearings go it makes a lot of noise, and it will leak),don't change it. Check the radiator cap, it could be shot, and it's a cheap fix. Next step would be to flush out the system. If u haven't done it in a long time, there could be a problem w/ rust and sediment plugging up the radiator, not allowing the coolant/water to circulate properly, causing it to overheat. Let me know how it goes. countrycurt0
