I cant shift from park to drive. I have to use a key to override the shifter. My 2007 chevy Aveo is a automatic

    Wow you have got to be a awsome repairman. Yes you were 100% correct. actually what it looked like was that there was a switch that was a little stuck and maybe getting a little worn. there was a little dust and debrei build up so i whiped around it and now it works good again. I thank you so much. I was gonna takie it into the dealer and have them check it. I'm sure its still under warrenty so I may still do it. But you surley took a big weight off my shoulder. Sounds like brake switch for shifter lock isnt working. UNDER BRAKE PEDAL there should be a cable that leads to the shifter in the mess of wires. make sure its fully connected. If not then unplug and reconnect that should fix if not then issue is at shifter end

Hi Lisa , how much do you know about automotive electrical systems ? Using wiring diagrams to locate testing points in an electrical circuit ,then using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter to take voltage readings ? Your vehicle has a safety feature called shift interlock , this will not allow you to move shifter out of park unless your foot is pushing the brake pedal . Same for ignition lock ,can't take the key out. Electicaly controlled solenoids. If the vehicle looses power this thing's will not work.

How do i replace/remove the shift lever cover on an automatic 2005 acura tl? It got sticky and now doesn shift into gear well.
All cars have this small opening on the shifter gate. It is always on the left side of the shifter when the shifter is on PARK. Pry that open and insert the car key. That should override the safety switch and let you shift the car off PARK.

if its a 5 speed, yes the shifting is loser than normal cars. the reverse is all jacked up.. if its anything like my 06 aveo when you shift into reverse you have to lift the little circle thing on your shifter up ad act like your putting it into first.. If it grinds try doing it slower. I HATE this transmission. Chevy did a horrible job on picking it. I always grind reverse no matter what

Check shift linkage. Lingage could be binding. Is the shifter on the column? If it is it could be the shifting tube. ( Check lingage on column and make sure it is working properly )

My chevy aveo won't go into gear. The gear shift says you are in Drive but the car acts as if it is in park
Most likely the shifter cable broke or became disconnected. Have someone shift the car (engine off, parking brake on) while someone else watches the transmisssion linkage to see if it moves. If it does move there is an internal transmission problem if it doesn't it is just a problem with the cable.

Unable to shift from park into drive
there is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal.there is by the shifter a little tab that can be popped out with a small screwdriver,and using your key,put into the hole and the mechanical device will release the shifter.
it is called a shift lock override
