I have a 1999 dodge durango 5.9. the engine shuts down while driving and starts back up on it own. it will sometimes shut down and take 15 mins to restart. the battery tested good, the cables all check out. ive seen others post that the ECM gets hot and causes this and if also seen the BCM could be doing this.
what could be the problem and how would i test for it?

Could be the idle control valve or stepper motor as it's sometimes called.if clogged or sticking it will cause engine to stall. Unplug it unbolt it give it a good squirt of carburettor cleaner inside this will dissolve the carbon and tarnish inside.let it dry for about 30 mins replace back on engine plug it back in an see if that cures it.
It is most likely one of two issues. Either the Camshaft sensor, or the Crankshaft sensor. Neither is too expensive nor too hard to replace. Try the Cam Sensor first. The 5.2L seems to have these more often. The 2.5L has the same problem, but it's usually the Crank Sensor.
First check for spark at any of the sparkplugs and if you have fire then check the fuel pressure. It should be 44-54 psi with key on engine off.If its not within these specs replace the pump.
2002 Durango shuts down without warning. Sit for about 30-45 min and will restart, run for a while, and shut down again. Shows "NO BUS" code. Took it to Dodge Dealer and had a diagnostic done....nothing!!! Have changed PCM, crank shaft sensor and am getting ready to RUN IT OFF A CLIFF if I can get it running long enough!!! It is a black hole and we are getting no where!! I can't even sell the dang thing!!
I have a 2000 dodge ram. I had the same problem the truck would just stall no matter how fast or slow i was going. It ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. You need to check for codes to find the problem. p0385-p0389 is the crank shaft sensor. It takes about 5 min. to change if thats the problem. On that year you might be able to turn the key to the on position but not starting then off, then on, then off, then on (three times) on the third time leave on and watch the odometer it will flash codes then will say p-done.
It sounds like a heat related fault to me,probably under the hood.Check all plugs, make sure the connectors are clean.Use a contact cleaner if any terminals look 'dodgy'.Please excuse the lingo,I'm Australian.
my mom has a 99 durango that did the same thing it would just stop running and would turn over but wouldnt start let it sit for a while then it would start right up it turned out to be the brain of the car the ecu dont know if this will help but its worth a shot
