Is the check engine light lit ? A wrench symbol light lit ? Disconnecting the battery cables is the sign of limited thinking . Hooking up a factory or professional scanner to view data an check DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's is the first step to find the problem . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.
This truck has 2 ignition shstems,One of the modules is malfunctioning. follow the primary wiring from distributor to the ignition modules closeby. Disconnect one at a time untill problem found.
seems that you might have some water in the gas tank. get some gas dryer and pour in the tank. 2 half pint bottles should do to a half tank of gas. good luck.
Check your intake and exhaust modules. I have a 1987 D21 and had the same problem (if I understand your post). I replaced the modules located behind the driver side headlights and it fixed the problem. Good luck! I hope this helps.
