My 1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.0L, Auto, 183,500 miles. Just had the head gasket replaced in 2008 and rebuilt the carb in 2007. Now I notice in the mornings first start (cold engine) it runs real rough and hesitates for about 30 to 45 seconds then it seems to clear up and runs good. It only does this once in a while (not everyday). The last time I had it smogged in March 2010 it BARELY passed on all readings (HC, CO, NO). Wondering what this could be. Any ideas? Please help me....... I'm thinking maybe the EGR valve?

I have one with 282K on it and have seen it all. Internal to the carb there is a choke valve, its looks like a plunger, beleive it or not they go bad and caused my truck to run horrible, loading up and running extremely rich. I have a mechanic replace mine and it fixed it right up. Darn little thing was like $$120.00 and its nothing to it....but it made the world of difference in the performance. Not I am getting some steam in the morning that smells of antifreeze.....head gasket time....not bad though..it made it to 282K!

2.6L Mighty Max 4x4 1988 has a blown head gasket...where would you look for a resonable rebuilt short / long block...or do you think it's worth trying to do a gasket replacement...189k miles...we live...

I'd at least invest some time and remove the head and look to see what you are working with. Have the head dye tested and also checked for warpage. if the head is OK, then do the gasket. If you severely overheated it, or if you had other engine problems before the head gasket failed, then I'd get a replacement engine ( many choices available from local craigslist, scrapyards and rebuilders ). Be sure to find the cause of the overheat that led to the gasket failure, otherwise you can do the same thing to the new one. If it's an automatic trans car, change the trans fluid also as it breaks down when it gets too hot.

I have a 1991 mitsibishi mighty max and it blows thick white smoke when I start it, why does it do that. It runs good though.

you have water/coolant entering the combustion chamber. either the head is cracked or you have blown a head gasket.

How do you shut off the "maintenance Req" light on the instrument panel? 1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max

There is a small switch located on the back of the innstrument cluster on the speedometer near where the cable mount to. remove the cover off of the cluster, sometimes easiest to locate a night (makes it easier to see) with a flash light looking in thru the windshield, simply click switch back over, after 25K miles you'll need to do again.
Please let me know if this had assisted you.
Thanks,
Tom

yes you should. use a small brush first and try to clean in behind the throttle plates inside as much as possible. then start the car, it may take a minute but it will start. then rev it up and spray some in the throttle. put a filter on it

Replace valve seals on a 1988 mitsubishi mighty

mcdevito75 here, That is a shop only job, the entire cylinder head has to come off and either a rebuilt installed or your old head is taken to the rebuilder, Most heads are made of Allumimum and extra care has to be taken removeing them from the engine, also you"d need a special tool to reove the valves from the head and another special tool to remove and replace the valve seals. Have the shop do this job.

My p/u 1988 mitsubishi 2.6L runs rough after replacing carb with

Have a qualified mechanic rebuild your original carburator and reinstall it with all the original vaccum hoses and controls functioning properly.

Someone smarter than you and I, designed this engine to function properly with the feedback carburator. Installing an aftermarket carb negates the entire emision control system and will not allow the engine to "Breathe" properly.
