Your best bet is to go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. Make sure you ask for a Charging system test and to test the Battery,
It is true the Regulator is in the Alternator. The Charging system test will show problems related to the Regulator. Its possible your Battery is shorting out internally. You could also have dirty connections on the main cables. Take it to one of the places I mentioned and you will know more.
Also, the portable Battery/Airpump devices are a good safeguard to being stranded. Their downfall is keeping them charged, but when new they work the best. Once you find the problem you will not need the Battery/Airpump as often. But you will still have a trouble light and airpump for other uses.
Disconnect the battery when you get home , the negative.
hook it back up before you go to work , if it starts ,
something is drawing power out of you battery .
its possible that the alternator could be bad , or
something else could draw it down.

Battery light is on and battery is not holding the charge because you have at lest one cell damaged
because of accidental short-circuits between the battery terminal. So most probably you need to get new one (in Sears starts from $49,99) For fuses location follow this link please
Good Luck

Sounds to me that your battery has shorted out and will not take a charge.Disconnect the battery and try to charge it, then check to see if it has taken power with a volt meter. A shorted battery will take all the power from the alternator and run it to ground leaving no power to run the car. Also check the alternator output with a volt meter after you have checked the battery as a shorted battery can burn out the alternator.
