Your best bet is to buy a Haines manual for your vehicle. They offer the best step by step instructions of all the manuals ive used, including all torque settings, timing, etc.
www.cargurus.com > Questions > Dodge > Journey CarGurusJan 18, 2015 - I have went in and replaced the water pump and the timing belt. ...Align the crankshaft sprocket (10) with the TDC mark (9) on the oil pump cover. 2. ...and then just shut off and won't restart? try unplugging the cam ... The two timingmarks for the camshafts are lined up and the crank is lined up with TDC.
Hey Brian,on your vehicle,it says that the timing belt should be replaced at the same time as water pump,so I would go that route,2 birds with one stone, also it's best to have a pictured step by step guide to do this and you will always have a guide to do repairs, here's a link on buying a repair manual.
Changing a timing belt on a Dodge Neon is no walk in the park for a novice. Severe engine damage can result if it is not done correctly. There is also some equipment that must be used like an hydraulic floor jack and an engine support fixture to support the engine when the front motor mount is removed to gain access to the belt. Failure to use the proper support equipment can result in broken motor or transmission mounts and possibly other parts being damaged.
If you really want to try this as a DIY project and you need step-by-step instructions, I would recommend purchasing a HAYNES or CHILTON manual for your vehicle from your local parts supply store or subscribe to the repair information available on-line atAllData.
disconnect cables from battery, drain radiator, Remove the Timing belt cover, timing belt, timing belt tensioner and if needed the timing belt rear cover, remove the bolts that hold the pump in place using a criss-cross pattern. Install the new pump making sure the o-ring seal is properly installed and replace all the other parts. If you need step by step instructions on how to do all these task I recommend the Haynes Repair Manual on your vehicle Manual 30036.
If this is something you have never done , best left to someone that has...engine damage can occur if not done 100% properly.
If you feel your able to do it...get a Chiltons or Clymers manual....it will have you all the steps needed. These can be obtained at any major parts store.
changing the belt itself is not too difficult, but getting to it is. There is a lot of stuff to remove before you get there. Depending upon your skill level and the amount of patience you have, a job such as this is better left to a reputable shop, unless you have lots of time and another vehicle to drive while you are working on it. If you do it yourself, get a decent repair manual... I can't give instructions here... just too much to write!
