I have a 1998 Cavalier (147,000 miles) that has made a ticking noise when I start it. However, revving the engine will quiet the noise before driving. Recently, it began making a extremely loud grinding noise when starting, that too will quiet when the engine is revved, but comes back when I accelerate. It does not lose power when I accelerate, but it feels horrible.

Unfortunately at 140,000 miles much like humans parts start to wear... now you can try to flush the oil system...I DON"T RECOMMEND IT.... I have seen engines tear apart from engine oil flushes.... drain refill the oil/filter with new oil and an additive may help, or pin down the noise to what lifter is going south and have it replaced... may end up being a very expensive repair depending on what they find when they open the engine up with high mileage...or just continue driving it untill it completely wipes out... I do belive its a hydraulic lifter that is not pumping up causing the tick and if so they usually last a long long time noisey.

My neighbor's 1998 Cavalier is making a strange noise. It has automatic transmission, new tires, and 155,000 miles. When idling at a stop, it sounds fine, but when it starts movig and hits 15 or 20 mph...

Try getting on an open road, get up to about 45 MPH or where ever the noise is loudest. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine off. You can roll in a straight line for a long time. Make sure nodody is around you. If the sound stops when the engine is off, then the noise is coming from the motor. If the sound is still there, its got to be coming from the tires. Id guess a wheel bearing.

FIAT PUNTO. Ticking for short period following start up

Definitely change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. After you change it add a half cup of Lucas engine oil suppliment when the engine is hot.
If if goes away you know it's cam or lifter issue. If it doesn't the ticking you hear may simply be your fuel system.

sounds like lifters, rods normally make a knocking sound try putting a couple of bottles of engine flush in and run the car around the block a couple of time then drain the oil and change the filter and replace the oil with a quality 15w 40 grade oil and see if the noise clears up. if it is still there you can try product called moreys oil addative this often helps quiet down liftes if still no good oyu may need to replace your lifters
