1996 Chevrolet Lumina Mini Logo

Hello, my 1996 chevrolet lumina is overheating. but, when it does the coolant, which is checked frequently, and at proper levels, fills up into the overflow tank and begins to boil. had thought that this problem may be due to my cooling fans which, quit working at the same time, may need new fuses. so, i went to the auto parts store and replaced them. no quicker than replacing them, did they blow out again. now afteer sitting without use because of the overheating problem it will not keep a charge. the battery was dead, so it was jumped and ran for 20 minutes. the car kept running, but once the car was to be restarted it was dead. Don't know idf this can possible relate to the problem, but the same day the car began to overheat, the alignment gave a bit too and there was a notable change from day to the ext. can you pklease help me figure out which direction to go in, in the way of repairs. i have a list of possible problems and they range all over the board.there are no tears or holes in my radiator and no leaks/stains on the ground.just overheats and fills the overflow with boiling water. i do have a crack and a small oil leak from that. but the mechanic i saw kept telling me that it was not a problem, just keepa close eye on the oil levels and i should be fine.ive checked it out plenty and it is small but could that have these consequences so much later on? also, there is no smoke coming out of my exhaust and no smoke under the hood until the car overheats them there is smoke.my car, before this instance only had that small crack i was told was nothing, and was in good running order. the list of possibilities for my problem include: *BAD HEAD GASKET *BAD INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET *bad or fauly thermostat *bad or faulty radiator cap *loose serpentine belt *bad or faulty sensors *water pump *heat core *bad or fauly hoses *bad or fauly freeze plugs *bad or fauly fas *bad or fauly motor relay *bad or fauly temperature switch * fa shroud *bad or fauly fan belt *bad or fauly release valves *bad or fauly engine coolant temperature sensor *bad or fauly fan sensor ALSO- i was told to check for coolant related leaks inside/ if the fans come on at the right temp and on time/ glogged water jackets/ back pressure in exhaust sys/ if the thermostat opens at right time/ manifold cracks/ if the thermostat is stuck shut/ bad fan clutch/ inoperativeelectrical colling canister/ to check the temp at the thermostat housing and the temp that is sent to the computer/ if there is debris in the radiator/ late ignition timing/ restricted exhaust sys/ and if ther are any air pockets in the coooling sys THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, THOUGH I AM MECHANICALLY INCLINED I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TEST FOR THESE THINGS. can you please help me with my 2 part question. the quicker i get it working the less i can stress about how my kids will get to school. thank you very very much. the kiddos do too KENDALL HOLLERAN [email protected]

First thing you gotta do is get the cooling fans working and make sure you have the right amount of antifreeze in the coolant,as for the battery charge it and clean the terminals carefully, you need to do at least that much to proceed with more diagnosis

How do you change 1992 chev lumina heater core

if the coolant level is at the proper level and the thermostat is good then before you pull the heater core out you can try disconnecting the heater hoses and drain or blow out as much coolant out of the heater core then connect separate hoses to the spigots and fill the heater core with CLR and let it sit for an hour before draining then flush out with water and repeat if necessary this sometimes works and you won`t have to remove the heater core.

Low coolant light

check for proper coolant level in your recovery tank. if low add to the full line and have the vehicle checked for a coolant leak

Car is overheating on short trips, A/C and Heater do not work. Fan seems fine and coolant levels are corret

You probably have a thermostat stuck closed, so cool fluid is nor circulating in your engine block...have it checked out and replaced if it is faulty.

1996 Legacy Overheating It has coolant and both fans are working. Overheats after about 10 min of driving. Checked oil was a little low put 1 liter in. Radiator has pressure, opened when hot and coolant...

Costs nothing to try this, just in case coolant level was low when or after bottle changed, and you got an airlock. Start car when cold, rad cap off and heater on. Now let in run until it comes up to normal operating temperatures and rad fan(s) kick on and off, 2 or 3 times, and add coolant to proper level in rad if it goes down during process. Then after that, put rad cap back on, fill coolant return bottle to proper level and try it. Quite often when re-filling an engine cooling system, people forget to turn on heater to get coolant circulating through the heater core.

Radiator and reservoir are empty after water pump change.

fill the raditor to the top only when cold, top off the coolant bottle level to full cold, reinspect the coolant bottle after the engine get to proper operation temputure and add coolant to the bottle only. NEVER take off the radiator cap when hot!

Overheating

Where is all the coolant going? Hopefully not into the block.
I am not an auto mechanic but If coolant needs to be replenished regularly and there are no leaks evident, then I would suspect a faulty head gasket.
