Usually when the thermostat goes bad , it is in the open position, cooling the engine, not making it over heat. You can check it, but I would check for oil in the top of the radiator, and steam coming out the exhaust. When a head gasket goes, you can drive 300 miles without it overheating, then another day, you won't go 10 miles, then all of a sudden, it won't go at all. A radiator shop can do a compression check for you and tell you exactly what piston it is. If you are still driving it, keep an eye on the temp gauge, don't let it overheat, and carry water with you. Make sure the radiator is clean, inside, no rocks clogging up the tubes, no grass on the out side, no bugs, make sure it has coolant in it, not just water, and make sure the fans are working in city traffic, and the AC is working properly. For some reason, it will upset a radiator some times. Check it out.

I have a 1995 ford contour SE 5 speed. it is running hot almost red lining.no fluids are leaking, no antifreeze smell inside, windows do not fog up when heat is on but heat is blowing cold air, fans are...

Could be a thermostat problem, or potentially a blown head gasket.

if you take the oil cap off and check under neath the cap (inside of cap) if there is sludge buildup i would get the gasket checked.

Also try check in the radiator, if it looks like there is gunk or **** in the radiator it may be just enough to block the thermostat sensor. Usually if its a thermostat problem the temperature dial doesnt move.

Firstly would check for head gasket, thermostat and note how fast it heats up, when does it overheat (on idle, driving on highway, driving round town, etc)

1995 taurus overheats while driving

Either Thermostat is sticking or water pump is going bad. Water pump usually spit out water through small hole of diaphram. Only way to check thermostat is pull it out. Then you might as well replace it.

I have a 1995 saturn.it only overheats when i drive it.it does fine when it idles.i have changed the water pump thermostat fan motor and radiator cap and flushed the whole system and it still overheats.

If your car is overheating when you drive it,but you have replaced and made sure the radiator fan motor is working and coming on,you have flushed the system and replaced all your cooling components, then you may have a blown head gasket.Check for a milky white look to your oil dipstick. If so,you have a blown head gasket.or you might also have an air pocket in your cooling system that you need to bleed out.Good luck.

Daughters 95 Sentra overheated this weekend. Lost a/c and cruise started to flash.... Could this be a thermostat. She said all fluids looked good and no leaks...

yes, the thermostat could be stuck closed.

I would still flush the system and install new antifreeze at least every 3 to 5 years.

Looks like this 95 Sentra needs servicing.

Good luck to you.

My 1995 bmw m3 overheats, but when i decelerate it starts to cool down, im thinking water pump im going to replace it with a metal impeler, should i be doing something different?

replacing the water pump is an ok idea. replace thermostat with a 12 degree cooler running one. drill 3/16" holes in it 180 degrees apart from each other. replace the thermostat housing with a metal one.

check the radiator as well. clogged or blocked. upon re-assembly make sure you don't have an air gap. re-bleed the system 15 minutes after you think you're done.

I have a 1995 chevy PU just replaced the motor and just started it up, It is overheating, new thermostat, water pump is good. New radiator, I was told it might be vapor locked some where.

Best is to bring it up to temperature, turn it off before it overheats, wait about five minutes and re-start and begin filling again (with heater on full heat) I prefer doing this with the front of the vehicle slightly raised so air travels to the radiator. Also check to see if there are any bleed valves on the engine (should be listed in manual). If you still have a problem, remove the thermostat and see if it still overheats...If so, you may have a new engine with a blown head gasket (if it's a used one) One other item to look at is to make sure that if you have an electric fan, make sure it's working.
I know you just did a lot of work...hope it's something simple!!

I have a 1995 ford windstar that seems to have a temp. problem. While driving the temp. gauge goes all the way to HOT. The van never overheats but the A/C will eventually start blowing warm air. I flushed...

oddly enough it sounds like a transmission problem, get a transmission shop to assess the problem, but first try replacing the thermostat. be sure to turn on the heater when adding antifreeze. I have had this problem with my windstar.
