My engine starts fine, but when it is put in gear and the accelerator pressed the vehicle doesnt move. I can get it to move if i hold the rpm right at around 2500 and then it just barely grabs and starts to move. It is the 4.6L V-8 with automatic transmission. It also has been sitting for about 7 months prior to me trying to move it. Prior to it being stored, it occasionally had problems where it would have trouble staying running and when brakes were applied the engine rpms would be pulled down till it almost killed the engine.

Hi D, I suggest you take the vehicle and have a digital diagnostic scan carried out on the vehicle. The problem seems related to one of the speed sensors and the scan will identify which. Regards John
bad transmission maybe. Try going into a lower gear (2 or 1) and giving it a little gas and holding it there. (about 2500 rpm) Hold it there for about 30 seconds. If it still doesnt move, look under at the side of the transmission where the shifter cable connects and make sure it is moving. Make sure the brake is on and the wheels are blocked and have a friend shift it back and forth while you look. Sometimes, the connection pin comes out and you wont shift. . If it does move right away, head to the transmission shop.
The vehicles computer will adjust the idle according to how the manufacture programmed it
After about one mine or so, the idle on most vehicles comes down to approx 750RPM, generically speaking
When you put the car in gear, assuming it is an automatic, the rpm will drop a 100 at most & may be adjusted by the computer, just as it does when you put the A/C on. That is to compensate for the change in engine load
You should be waiting for the rpm to come down to 650 to 800 & then a couple more minutes for some temp to come up, before driving off. In cold weather wait at least 5 min or more
I think your vehicle is not working correctly, or you not explaining it in a way I understand what answer you want
did you check and see if the cable snapped for the accelerator, have someone push the peddle a few times and you watch to see if the accelerator lever that the cables connect to move if not they obviously broke and need to be replaced
If the engine starts with a good RPM but does not move when engaged in gear then it is possible that the CLUTCH is faulty and needs a change as it is slipping.
If there is no higher RPM when the accelerator is pressed then the engine needs a tuning. The electrical section for ignition must be checked specially the timing and also the fuel supply and pressure.
