1992 dodge dakota pickup truck Will not shift in to overdrive, other than that shifts fine into all other gears

You lost your 2-4 and that is normally the Band or Drum

you will need the ****** rebuilt to fix that problem.. sounds like truck was driven in town with the overdrive on.. overdrive is for highway use only any in town driving in that gear will destroy it...

I don't have the shifting schematics for THIS vehicle .
However, they are available in the vehicle's repair manual. If you obtain this manual look for what is common between 2nd gear, final drive and overdrive this is your problem.
Remember they source of the problem may require a rebuild of the transmission. You may want to save some time and just give it to a repair shop.

Not sure about your trans, but on some the modulator can have a leak & this will make it hold gears much longer than usual, is usually a small diameter vacuum line from the manifold to the trans, check it's conections

I have the same problem and i cant figure out the solution either one day it worked next day it didnt

You have a short to ground in the internal wiring harness.The first thru third shifts are done hydralicly.The SMEC then applies a ground to the overdrive solenoid for fourth gear and the TCC solenoid for torque converter lockup.

the trans has a serious failure, that is why the metal, it can be overhauled for less than a replacement

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.
