Hi I I have a new 4L80 full manual w transbrake in a street car w a 582 cui engine that has several issues from start and the US factory are not answering (I am a oversee customer, thanks), I have to think and do myself .1. forth gear is very soft engaging and. 2. lockup does only engage below 1000rpm and disengages at 1500 3. Heating problem, there is 220 degrees in rear of pan and only 140 to the cooler and 105 from cooler. There was a special rear case cooler fitting that is mounted but as there seems to be a internal bypass leak I'm thinking of that fitting may be wrong. Can somebody direct me about this , I need to get to the track this week and the trans seems to be ok in 1,2,3 gear so the heating problem is the problem I must fix Thanks Kent

    Ok about the forth gear but how can it be so that the trans cooler not is getting same inlet temperature as in pan, TCI have diagrams of temperature and 260 degrees is not good for anything in the trans. About that the lockup does engage in that low pm only and the falls out so early, I thing it is a pressure problem ? I think that that pressure problem has a connection to the soft fourth gear ? / Kent

There is usually an o-ring inside of those connectors. They also can crack if over tightened.

Is the filter new? Have you checked the fluid ports to make sure one isn't getting plugged up?

Your heat is not excessive, and 4th gear is suppose to feel soft on engagement. 4th is more or less an overdrive and if you had a hard shift into it, it would really wear on the gears.

My temps usually go around 260-270 on my tranny and no problems for 3 years.

I wouldn't worry much about it.

    The temp reduces on its way to the cooler.



    lock up is suppose to be at low rpm, it needs to unlock at high rpm and drop to 3rd gear...4th is only an overdrive for low load operation.

Jimmy stalls while driving, shifting issues


The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

What transmission is in my 1992 c1500 truck it has the 4.3 engine


some stamp this on the dipstick for the transmission. without seeing the pan on the transmission its either a 700-r4 4L60 or a 4L80 trans. if you count the number of bolts in the trans it would help

I have a c6 transmission with transbrake valvebody,when you shift from 1st to second gear the rear tires lock up in second gear ,all other gears work fine and transbrake works fine also.


You need to have second gear replaced.It sounds like it it seized.Not a simple fix but probably the only fix.Been there,and know it is frustrating.
