I have a 1986 Chevy Silverado with a 350 engine, why does my top radiator hose keep collapsing?


The hose collapses because there is air in the cooling system. If the system is properly full, the hose cannot collapse because water does not compress. If there is a leak in the system, you need to repair it, refill and bleed the cooling system, and ensure that the reservoir has a proper level of coolant in it. If there are no leaks in the system, then the reservoir (recovery) bottle could be low on coolant, allowing air into the system during the expansion and contraction that occurs as the coolant heats and cools. Another thing that can cause this issue is a defective/worn out radiator cap. I would recommend replacement of the cap, refill and bleed the cooling system, then top off the reservoir and then monitor for any further issues.

Air lock cooling system


Not sure I follow your wording on the different temps. If the system is full of coolant and working correctly, the thermostat should open at 195 degrees which would be several miles down the road. Once the thermostat opens both radiator hoses should be warm. If the water pump is not working the engine will get hot very quickly.
Have you tried running without the thermostat to see what happens ?

The cooling system could be low on fluid, and you could have air in the system. That is the most common reason for no heat at idle.
The leak could be a hose or a pin hole in the radiator.

Lower heater hose leaks


  • The lower radiator hose just goes to the engine block. Go to your nearest parts store and buy one. When you get home make sure that it matches the one you're about to remove.
  1. Have something to catch the radiator fluid as you pull that radiator hose off.
  2. Now route the new one. Fill the radiator with antifreeze. Turn the car on and the defrost on high.
  3. This is a must to open the thermostat and burp any air out of the system.
  4. After the engine cools down, re-top off the antifreeze and top off the reservoir.
  5. The job will be completed at this time.

Hello, I am the owner of a 2005 jaguar x-type. Upon start up when driving away I notice a "gurgling" sound coming from the engine in the location of the glove box.


Sounds like air in cooling system. Coolant comes through to back of glove box area for your heat supply.
Have you noticed less available heat than normal?

Check the coolant level in radiator, not just the top up bottle. DO THIS WHEN ENGINE IS COLD as hot system is under pressure.

Possibility of head gasket leak suppling gases to coolant system. IF so may be producing some persistant heavy white steamy exhaust, though not necessarily.

Topping up coolant will (should) make noise go away at least temporarily. You should look to see if any obvious leaks or wet spots at hose clamps and heater hose connections.

When engine is cold, open Radiator cap, look down (flash light helps?) to see fluid level, should be full to top.
If not, top up with correct coolant mix, leaving cap off, start motor and allow to idle till warm. If level drops top off some more. Watch the fluid as it flows past cap opening. a few bubbles for a few mins may be normal, but continous stream of bubbles indicate head gasket leak. Turn on the heat in car to full, (not the fan, just heat level) gently rev the engine and top up fluid at same time, (2 people) replace cap. Done. If there are no apparent problems.

If noise returns or does not go away, you'll need a professional inspection.

You may have an air bubble in the system. Try removing the upper radiator hose and see if there is fluid there if not fill radiator with fluid until it starts to leak out at that point and replace hose. Start the engine and let it run until the thermostat opens and add more radiator fluid. Leave the radiator cap off for the entire process.

I am having a problem with antifreeze smell and leak. I can't see where the leak is coming from but I do see spots on the ground. It does not over heat but it does have a sent of pancake syrup once heated....


LEAK COULD BE COMING FROM RADIATOR.WHEN YOU FIRST START VECHICLE UP IN MORNING LET ENGINE IDLE TO GET UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPEN AND COOLANT PRESSURE BUILD UP. TURN ENGINE.OFF. RAISE HOOD YOU WILL SEE LEAK. THE COOLANT PRESSURE WILL PUSH OUT ANTIFREEZE.LOOK FOR LEAKS AROUND TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE.LOOK ON SIDES RADIATOR AND LOOK BELOW RADIATOR AREA WHERE COOLANTS FANS LOCATED RADIATOR CORES WILL LEAK AND LOOK AROUND WATER PUMP + BYPASS HOSE + CHECK HEATER HOSES TO HEATER CORE THAT GOES THROUGH BACK LOWER FIRE WALL.

My 08 Impala heater blows hot air when moving and cold air when stopped. Any suggestions???


My 2005 impala had the same problem. Here's the answer. The heater core is plugging up. When you sit idling, the fluid movement is slow, therefore the junk settles in the heater core, still allowing enough fluid to get through to heat. When you drive it, the fluid movement is much faster, therefore sending the junk into the heater core, plugging it up. To check for this problem: Get engine temp up to normal, feel both heater hoses. If one is hot and the other one is cooler, fluid is not passing through. Take off both heater hoses at the top of the engine, blow out fluid with low pressure.(5 or 10 lbs.) Fill both hoses with the right radiator flush. (Some engines are aluminum) Let stand for 4 hours. Flush with new antifreeze. (I used a garden sprayer) Stick the sprayer end in the heater hose and tape tight. My vent temp WAS 100 degrees. After fix was 152!!

Top radiator hose is HOT, radiator is steaming


have u replaced the radiator and hoses? Thermostat could also be stuck open. Water pump could also be your issue. with motor cool and of remove radiator cap(cap may be bad as well) top-off fluid and start car check for fluid flow with flashlight. Water pumps typically leak from what is called a weep hole when the shaft seal fails. Yours will be located under the timing cover (drivers side) running of the timing belt.

Over heating


Check to see if your water pump is leaking radiator fluid through the weep holes, or maybe a wore out drive belt. good luck.
