Question about 1988 Chevrolet C1500

1 Answer

I drive a 1988 chevy c1500 with a 305ci tbi and 5 speed manual transmittion. The engine was idleing erraticly up and down and the service engine soon light was on. Upon investigation I found the Ignition Bi-pass Wire used for timing the engine was loose. I repared the connection and the idle improved and the light went off. After driving the truck 5 miles or so approching a stop light in 5th gear under no accelerration the check engine light comes on and the engines rpm started to increase. I disengaged the clutch and the engine rpms were steady around 2000 or so for 5 seconds then the engine started to sputter and stalled. The engine would not start but did refire after 5 min of sitting. The truck only has 47000 miles, new plugs, wires, intake gasket, o2 sensor, temp sensor, and throtlle body gasket. When the truck refired the service engine soon light was off and it runs smoothly. When hooked up to a scan tool no codes are detected, reguardless of wether the light is on or not. Thank you for any input that may help in my repair.

Can I put a 366 cid engine and a 5-speed transmission in a 1988 1Ton 4WD Chevy P/U with the C/K body style?

Yes for the 366 since it is a MKIV like the 454; the difference is the taller deck making it taller and wider, but I would expect there is plenty of room in the C/K engine bay for the taller deck 366 MK IV. Note the 366 also takes a different intake than the short deck MK IV.. What 5 speed is it. The 5 speed may (very likely will) be different than the 4 speed that came in the truck. Since you have a 4WD, the location of the output of the 5 speed vs-a-vis the 4 speed is quite important. You may be looking at altering location of the transfer case and changing the length of both drive shafts from the transfer case to the banjos. If you have a drive train specialty shop in your area I would get their input on the changes (cost) involved in the possible drive train changes required by the length difference between the 5 speed and the 4 speed gearbox.

My 1994 5-speed manual Pathfinder sputters and jerks when it's cold

Here are the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and/or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving

Code 15 on 1988 ram 150 without vehicle speed sensor

Code 15 relates to a failure in the vehicle speed sensor circuit. The job of the vehicle speed sensor is to inform the computer about the speed of the vehicle so the computer can calculate engine load and prepare the engine idle speed control system while the vehicle is decelerating. On deceleration, the idle speed control system will allow additional air flow into the engine as the vehicle rolls to a stop. Usually code 15 will be accompanied by erratic speedometer readings (or no reading), erratic AT gear shifting, TCC lockup clutch instability, and intermittent or complete failure of the cruise control.

Dies when i stop

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.
To correct this problem I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

1988 5 speed Honda Accord

Ensure your spark plugs, wires (ignition coil and spark) and your filters (air and fuel) are within 2 years of installation It's erratic at 800 rpm as the engine is cold and they like the 2200 range for 3 minutes before they kick down on their own. Press the pedal twice before inserting your key. The owners manual states depending on the outside temperature, the engine will require more priming. Update if possible.
