Trouble starting keeps running after turning it off

If it is chugging and running rough after you turn the key off, it may be "dieseling" which is caused by carbon buildup in the cylinders and the idle speed being higher than spec. Pulling the coil wire from the coil and the engine continues to run is a good example.

2002 galant no start whining noise from starter

Sounds like a bad starter. Just an idea It is a poor idea to let someone work on your car if that person does not know what they are doing. My thought is your friend ran the starter a lot and burnt something out.
