You shouldn't have to remove anything else, unless it is in your way, one end of the shaft should just come out of the spindle, after you beat it with a hammer...lol, but seriously, and then the other side you need a special tool it is a 2 prong fork, to pry between the tranny and the shaft, and that should get it out.

How to repack front wheel bearings on a 98 Jeep Cherokee 4X4

YOU CAN"T is the short answer..... sorry,, RTM much>?
ive posted the free fsm like 300 times now on this car.
ever like search.?
first off, on all cars made, what the factory made or dealer sells ins one thing, what the after market does, is another.
a fact.
in fact some cars with Integrated hubs new, the aftermarket sells them and sells the rebuild kits too.
the book covers the service step by step.
what parts you use or by is your call.

now ill read that book for you.
btw I sold my 99 but not the books.
XJ jeep, the book is here, (over 301 posted,)

http://www.morris4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service

at least you said its 4wd, not all are. 2points for that.

USA XJ jeep, 1998.

the trick is learning how to navigate the book , chapter #
the fact is we look first, you didn't, what is there who knows.?
maybe the last shop put on serviceable hubs. right?
if you had looked at the back side, you'd have seen 3 bolts
holding it on. and that tells you what?, that they are integrated hubs.
on new car, and at Jeep parts counters. world wide.

26271221-ky1blxw0v1am10ilppsnvnq2-3-0.jpgnow lets do this backwards
lets pretend to buy the part, hark , you can online.
and see all the makers of parts aftermarket in 1 click
no kidding, a fact.
see the 8 makers here,(can be more)
all are 100% integrated, hubs, (not saying there are not other makers, or kits, the world is a huge place and I cant tell you
all answers world wide for sources)

you could off them, take them both to a shop, and ask for them to rebuild them at $100 /hr labor, but, i bet they just laugh at you.
I'm not. but why not just remove it , check it and if bad replace it.
take it to any auto-store in town, NAPA is best. and set it on the counter, and say, got this, answer yes.
how to repack unpackable bearings,.DIY.

shorter answer, R&R it.
get a shop to fix it.
buy the part first, and see what you got first.
look at it and ponder packing it.

How to remove the axel shafts from the Diff. 94 ford expl.

Do one side at a time, Jack the front wheel off the ground and remove. Remove the Brake Caliper and Rotor. Remove the large center nut in the Hub. Now remove the two bolts holding the lower part of the strut to the A-Arm and separate. You should be able to pull the hub down far enough to get the end of the axle out with some wiggling and possibly swearing, it not you can remove the lower A-Arm and just pull it off. PLACE A DRIP PAN UNDER THE SPOT WHERE THE AXLE GOES INTO THE TRANSMISSION BEFORE PULLING THE AXLE! Replace the axle to trany input seal and reverse order my instructions. Repeat for other side. This is a good time to replace Brake Pads and Rotors as well.

1994 ford ranger 4x4 hubs make grinding/clicking noise after taken out of four wheel drive

I think yours has the automatic locking hubs that slide over the the rotor hub. If this is the case than what has probably happened is a u-joint has gone bad and wiped out that auto hub.

Be prepared for some sticker shock on those hubs. they are not cheap. The usual fix for this is to replace the front axle ujoints and what ever hub is making the noise, hopefully just one.

I've changed rotors before but never on a 4 wheel drive. Could you tell me how to on a 1989 ford ranger?

Brake Rotor (Disc) - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Loosen the wheel lug nuts.
  2. Jack up the front of the vehicle and support on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire.
  4. Remove the brake caliper assembly as described earlier in this section, but do not disconnect the brake hose.
  5. Suspend the caliper assembly by a piece of wire. Do not allow it to hang by the brake hose.
  6. Follow the procedure given under wheel bearing removal in Suspension and Steering for models with manual and automatic locking hubs (lines down).
New rotor assemblies come protected with an anti-rust coating which should be removed with denatured alcohol or degreaser. New hubs must be packed with EP wheel bearing grease.
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

With Manual Locking Hubs
(see Figures 2 through 17)

  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the retainer washers from the lug nut studs and remove the manual locking hub assembly from the spindle.
  4. Remove the snapring and spacer from the end of the spindle shaft.
  5. Remove the outer wheel bearing locknut from the spindle using 4 prong spindle nut spanner wrench, T86T-1197-A or equivalent. Make sure the tabs on the tool engage the slots in the locknut.
  6. Remove the locknut washer from the spindle.
  7. Remove the inner wheel bearing locknut from the spindle using 4 prong spindle nut spanner wrench, T86T-1197-A or equivalent. Make sure the tabs on the tool engage the slots in the locknut.
  8. Remove the outer bearing cone and roller assembly from the hub. Remove the hub and rotor from the spindle.
  9. Using seal removal tool 1175-AC or equivalent remove and discard the grease seal. Remove the inner bearing cone and roller assembly from the hub.
  10. Clean the inner and outer bearing assemblies in solvent. Inspect the bearings and the cones for wear and damage. Replace defective parts, as required.
  11. If the cups are worn or damaged, remove them with front hub remover tool T81P-1104-C and tool T77F-1102-A or equivalent.
  12. Wipe the old grease from the spindle. Check the spindle for excessive wear or damage. Replace defective parts, as required.

To remove the right front axle shaft I remove the rotor and hub, will the axle shaft pop out of the differ housing.

Most likely no. You will be able to get it out but may have to use a large screw driver to get the different end out carefully prying around the point where it installs in the differential.
