Vehicle will not rev over 4000 rpm and cuts out when it gets hot what do i need to look at first..

It may be a plugged exhaust catalitic converters sometimes act this way.

4000 RPM? You have hit the rev limiter. It's there so you don't over rev the engine and do damage.

The vehicle has a built in no load engine REV limiter to prevent damage to the engine from drivers who insist on "gunning the engine".

03 mitsubishi endeavor engine cuts out at 4000 rpm when driving revs fine when in neutral. It has no engine codes. any ideals?


At 4000 rpm what does your speedo say. Your computer may be limiting both your mph and your rpms. I have a 2004 Ford Ranger at 90 mph the engine sputters and seems to miss. It will stay at 90. In neutral it revs fine. My problem is because of chip programming in the computer. Your problem may be the same.

2002 cavalier 2.2 cuts out at 4000 rpm


The 2.2 or the 2.4 neither one has RPM limiter. On these vehicle when the timing chain goes,you end up taking out a valve. If your timing chain is out of timing it will do exactly what you describe, now the pecking noise if that is a valve it will do exactly also

2000 pontiac grand am 3.4 motor auto trans 4 door.Car starts and drives okay motor seems to stumble slightly between 3000-4000 rpms. with car stopped in park try to rev motor will only go between 3200-4000...


Hi Tom your vehicle is equipped with a Rev limiter it will not allow you to rev the engine above 4000 with the trans in park; as for the first problem you may have one of two things, one of the spark plugs or spark plug wires is bad or you have a flat spot on the throttle positioning sensor in which case have be replaced. cutting out and sputtering at 4000 rpms are normal, its the rev limiter kicking in, all of them do it, as far as hard starting, is it just sense its been cold?? might want to put some fuel stabilizer in it.

When turn on the car in the morning, i accelerate and the revolutions up to 6,000rpm normal. In 3 minute when the car up the motor temperature to the normal operation, i accelerate and the revolutions up...


To begin with, if you are revving a cold engine to 6000 RPM, you are asking for a blown engine. Most OBD vehicles are equipped with a rev limiter that will cut off fuel at 3000 to 4000 rpm to prevent you from over-revving your engine and blowing it up. If yours is revving to 6000 RPM cold, then the rev limiter, for some reason is not working while it is cold. I have no explaination for this. The best thing I can tell you is to stop revving your engine so high when it is cold unless you really want to see what an engine looks like after is has gone off like a grenade.

In neutral car is not going more then 4000 rpm


The 300M is equiped with a rev-limiter. The technology is designed to protect the engine. It keeps you from blowing it up when it has no load on it...If it is driving and shifting ok, and you have no check engine light on...there is nothing wrong.
Why would want to rev the engine past 4000 rpm in neutral anyway? Max torque comes in around 3950 RPM...
If you keep reving it up in neutral you might throw the computer in to LIMP mode, then you wont go no where.

Mini one auto 2002 revs won't go above 4000 rpm


Hi    try this  switch on ignition without starting depress gas pedal fully and hold down for a second or    two then start the car and lift up your foot slowly when it fires. sometimes this will reset ECU    let me know if this works
