Question about Toyota MR2

1 Answer

Yea, after swapping the ECU my MR2 started. Now to the problem that (I think) killed the ECU. The new one may be hurt. When the car quit the first time I was revving the engine to about 6000 rpm. I drove it for a few minutes and did it again. The engine died just like before but when it dropped rpm it came to life again. This time the windshield wipers are stuck on. I think this could signify a problem in the ECU. It also burned the fuse link at the battery again.

I agree. I would test the power from the ecu. It may be sending off the wall power signals.

I disagree the ECU is the problem. I think the new ECU has been hurt by whatever is causing the problem. Something must short out to melt the fuse link. I am hoping the windshield problem is the relay arced stuck. What could be shorting the system only at high rpms?

Have you checked the voltage regulator to make sure it is not pushing out to high of voltage? Have you used an ohmmeter on all your fuses to see if any are getting more than 12 volts?

  • Stuart Stevenson Aug 07, 2010

I have not checked the voltage regulator. I will. I have checked all the fuses with my ohm meter. If it is the regulator I think I should see the voltage increase along with the motor rpms.

I also would test the wiper relay and switch. You may have a short.

    will do - thanks

put new battery in - put volt meter on battery (12.5V) - started car - let warm up for approx 5 min - revved motor to 5500 - volt meter showed 13.5 V - motor died - fuse link melted more insulation - as motor slowed it exhaust backfired and settled down to idle - I think I will change the alternator as there is a loud whining/scraping sound from around 3000 on up - the sound is like a bearing skidding

I would do the same thing as well. the voltage readings seem correct, but with the wire, either there is a bad fusible link or to big of fuse or there is just to much power being sent to or from pcm

is this IMMO stock or aftermarket.

so is this 100% loss of spark
did you use a scan tool or if older than 1996 (USA) use the jumper diagnostic jumper and crank for 5 seconds, to see IF ECU sets
codes? for spark, CMP or CKP?
use the ECU to tall you why it dont spark, first , after IMMO is happy.

GOOD POINT ! THE OTHER ENGINE NEEDS THAT CHIP FROM THE OTHER ECM. OR HAVE YOURS REPROGRAMED ! THERE'S SHOPS OUT THERE THAT HAVE EXPENSIVE MACHINES THAT CAN RESET YOUR PARAMETERS. ERASE OLD MEMORIES, AND ESTABLISH EVEN BETTER PERFORMANCE. I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT MIGHT BE ADVANTAGEST FOR YOU TO SPEND $100 TO RESOLVE YOUR ISSUES, WHAT CAN IT HURT ? GO THE EXTRA MILE, IT MIGHT JUST WORK !

I am having trouble with my 1990 MR2 front brakes. I get approx 1500KM before they start shuddering under braking. are the Turbo brake assembly different to the NA assembly??

Yea they are different! Rotors,Calipers and Knuckles. And there is also ABS on the turbo and I dont think they put them on the N/A in the early years. Did you cut the rotors b4 putting on new breaks? That will cause shudder....Incorrect tire pressure and as well as incorrect tire ware will cause some...And in Old struts from 20 years ago and that will help in tire ware and shudder....OLD Mr2's also need to have the tie rods changes.....they like to break. Jack up the car as well and shake the wheels left and right and that should tell you of tie rod issues. Hope that helps. Ive had five MR2's and have seen the majority of the problems.

.044 plug gap.
Use NGK iridium plugs as you do not have to gap them and they last 100K miles.
Most regular NGK come pre-gapped, It never hurts to check though
