Question about 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

My car is a 2001 dodge grand caravan/3.3L v6. the A/C, according to two mechanics who checked it, has good freon pressure. But the A/C clutch doesnt kick in when I turn it on every time. I thought it may be the a/c fan relay (pop riveted to the front bumper behind the grill covering, since they told me that has been the typical culprit for the a/c in the 2001 dodge 3.3L engines. The car has two fans in front of the block, and one of them didnt cut on even though the engine was very warm, until they coaxed it and moved the wiring harness. So I replaced the relay (oem was $76 incl. tax). My A/C still doesnt work very well in stop and go traffic. It did work ok when I took it on a trip. I have thought of replacing the compressor and the accumulator/dryer and the expansion device, but is that overkill in trying to fix it. One local car repair shop advised me they always like to take all the 134a freon out, then start to look at what's wrong. That sounded like I would be stuck there with whatever they said goes and whatever price they wanted, especially after taking all my freon out first.

The culprit is usually the clutch.

My ac compressor is grinding but for now will a smaller Serpentine belt work to bypass if until I I get a new one my car is a 2004 dodge grand caravan sxt 3.8 v6 allwheel drive

The short answer is no.
You need the compressor in place to make the belt run the water pump in the right direction.
You can get a used compressor that has a working clutch and not put freon in it if necessary.

If your Injectors has a fuel during cranking your engine, check your spark plugs if it is wet dry it up, or change it by new ones. Then crank it again.

99 Dodge Grande Caravan the A/C blows hot air and a hissing sound under dash

Well the hissing sound could be a vac leak or the freon flowing thru the system.
Someone needs to check the freon charge in the system with a gauge and the electrical circuit to the compressor clutch.

Compressor on 96 dodge caravan will not start even after charging system with freon. does computer have to be reset

check for bad fuse under hood. also check for ac relay issue. also under hood . you will find a power dis. center under the hood. (just like a fuse panel)the system does use pressure switches, but check the fuse and relay first. if you have power and ground at the compressor and it does not engage, then the ac clutch is bad. you can check that at the two wires at ac compressor w/ a test light.

What would be wrong with a 99 caravan if the ac stopped working suddenly?

either the clutch on the pump went out or the system has no freon left.

Air conditioner inop

First suggestion is the clutch not engaging. Check voltage at clutch plug and confirm power source, if there is power there then clutch would work unless it has failed.
