All you have to do is look at the transmission in order to tell.
A cable will be thick and straight, while an electronic unit will use a thin, flexible, wire.

you did not say how old car is but older cars use a drive cable comming from tail shaft of transmission that drives speedometer directly these cables wear out and break at diff places

newer cars use electronic sensors inside transmission , sensors do go bad and electronic plugs do get bad connections

and all years the speedo's in dash do give out too

How do change the speedomiter cable

Hi, If you can reach up behind the dash to unscrew the speedo cable that will be the hardest thing to do. the other is on the transmission side and is easier to undo. But if you have the newer style of speedo (electronic speed sensor) you will be opening another can of worms. The best thing there is to have a mechanic do this. Good luck.

My speedomiter is jumping up and down

your Honda Accord does not have a speedometer cable. It runs electronically from a Vehicle Speed Sensor on top of the transmission. I'm having the same trouble. it is either the vss needs to be replaced or your speedometer might be shot. I can't find that there are any fuses for the speedometer or the VSS. maybe this will help.

Now speedomiter in my truck.

in a 1998 it should be electronic. if it's a fuse. it is either in the power distribution center in front of the brake master cylinder or in the driver side of the dashboard at the drivers door opening. but my honest guess is the electronic speed sensor on the transmission. go to a auto parts store and they can tell you exactly where it's located.
