Question about 1985 Chevrolet Corvette

My 1985 corvette smokes out the exaust only when at idle and engine at running temperature.

Most likely worn valve guides and probably dry cracked and fallen off valve stem seals you may get lucky with just replacing valve stem seals but may need guides installed in heads

    Actually it ended up being the cat converter. It was burned out inside. Replaced with a new one and car runs like new.

You may not have all the things I list. these are things that will make an engine run rich. ECM, 02 sensors, map sensor, mass air flow sensor, vacuum leaks, throttle position sensor, Clogged air filter, Clogged catalitic converter. You have already replaced the injectors and the ECT , so that rules them out. Check for codes. Start with vacuum leaks. Hoses and the intake manifold gaskets. If you need more info let me know. Was running great then it just would not start and when it did it started idling fast now the exaust will glow red

if engine is running without missfire check catyletic converter for plugging also very rich running will cause exhaust to glow but will cause alot of black smoke from tail pipe I dont reccomend driving vehicle till exhaust or rich running is fixed can lead to engine failure

Chevy 305 small-block engine runs good has a bad idle and dies when idling. I used a 350 intake and ignition system and put onto the 305 and need to know what to look for to make idle

if this is a fuel injected engine youll most likely have to replace the idle speed control sensor this should solve that problem.youll have to get one for the intake that you put in the car(one for the year and engine size of the replacement parts)

When cold RPM's very about 300 to 500 if I try and drive the car it will backfire and has very little power. After it warms up the car runs perfect like there is nothing was wrong. This is a 1985 corvette...

I think I'd be looking at the coolant temperature sensor. It supplies info regarding engine temperature, thus regulates fuel accordingly. If it tells PCM, that engine is already warm, when still cold, it can cause those conditions as well as others.

Injector pulse stops after warm up

Most temperature sensor decrease in resistance as temperature goes up. As resistance decrease, current increases while the voltage remain constant, which is usually 5 volts. What you can do is unplug the temperature sensor, that should keep the car from dying for diagnostic purpose only.Look for a plug that is similar to the temperature sensor. Sometimes, a wire terminals is not plugged in where they should be. You know the the temperature sensor is working because the computer responded by turning the engine off. Only that it is connected to the wrong input of the computer thats why it does that. To sum it up look for similar looking wires terminals they maybe crossed. Look for sign where a wiring had been repaired. they may have been connected to the wrong place. Hope this helps.

Blowing oil and smoke out of valve cover. radiato is boiling over

There are several things that can be causing the problems. Blowing smoke and oil out of the valve cover is usually a sign that the engine rings are worn out and/or the PVC valve is not working correctly to remove the gases from the engine case. The radiator boiling over can be from several causes. A bad radiator cap can cause the engine to boil over. Lack of antifreeze can also do the same thing since the later model smog engines run at a higher temperature and use higher pressure radiator caps. A cracked head can also cause the radiator and engine to overheat. This can be checked at a local parts store with a radiator checker that will show if there is exaust gases in the radiator when the engine is running. Worse case senerio is you blew a head gasket out and your oil will look like bubbly milky creamy in color from the water that has gotten into and mixed with the oil from the engine. You are going to have to do some trouble shooting on this one to find the answers. Good Luck, RAC
