Question about 1991 Chrysler LeBaron

1 Answer

The alternator on my girlfriends 91 Chrysler Lebaron isnt producing enough power to recharge or keep my battery charged. its giving me the codes DTC41, DTC 35, AND DTC 31, now i know that one of those codes is for a bad relay for the fan and that has been replaced. the other two are something along the lines that there is a short or bad terminal in the wiring causing a bad connection. i replaced the alternator and pulley in the last week because they needed to be replaced. this problem started shortly after monsoon season started here in arizona. im going to change the positive terminal on the battery as it looks like it needs to be replaced and i dont have the money to take it to an electrician. what could this be.

There are 2 types of alternators for this vehicle .code 41 is a field circuit code for the alternator The SBEC controlls the charging rate of the alternator . It could be wiring connections or the SBEC ( computer) to be the problem .You may have to back probe some terminals to find the problem ,but first check all of the engine grounds including the negative battery cables. The fault code for the field circuit is most likely generated because of an open circuit . The SBEC (computer) supplies the ground to energize the field circuit ..

Hope this helps

1994 LeBaron battery and alternator good but will not charge

Check for power on the large wire at the alternator. this can be done with the engine off. If there is not battery voltage at that wire at the alternator than there is an open circuit beaten the alternator and the batty. If I remember correctly there are fusible links somewhere in that circuit. Either way you'll have to start digging in to see where the problem is on that wire.

91 LeBaron, battery does not charge. I can use a charger at night, but car will only run until battery runs out of juice and then it dies. I have replaced the altenator.

The problem may be the computer.
Most 1990s Chrysler products used the computer to control the alternator.
You may have to get someone with a shop manual to test the system.

Battery will not hold a charge.i start the car and drive it ,2 days later the charger has to be put on again

first you need to determine that the battery is in good enough shape to take a charge, your local auto parts store can test the battery for you, this usually requires you to leave the battery with them for a half hour or so, if the battery test out fine then your alternator is probably at fault, these can also be tested to ensure that they are putting out the standard 13 amps, if the alternator is putting out the car is essentially running off the battery and this usually last a day or two before it needs recharging, all the battery is suppose to do is crank the car, once the car has been cranked everything runs off power supplied by the alternator wich also keeps your battery charged, hope this helps you out joanne!!

Check guages light comes on after short drive while engine is running, and the car died while driving on I-95 the lights started flickering getting dimmer. the radio would turn off when anything else...

It sounds like the Alternator is actually bad.
One great way to determine this:
Recharge the new battery with a trickle charge overnight. Make sure use remove the wires going to the Battery before recharging.
Replace the Battery Wires.
Get the Vehicle Started.
When it has Started: Leave it Running and Disconnect and Remove the Negative side of the Battery. If the Vehicle dies, it is the Alternator that is bad, and needs to be replaced..
The Battery starts that vehicle, and provides nominal power to certain accessories. The Alternator actual Runs the Engine and Recharges the Battery with a low trickled charge.

My truck will start with a jump but will shut off. battery checked ok,alternator checked ok.plenty of gas. runs at high idle shutsoff at low idle. whats wrong?

if the battery is ok why do you need to jump anyway? most likely its not ok, the alternator do not provide enough power at idle to supply the engine the amount of power needed to keep it running, below 1200rpm you actually use the battery, in the range of 1400 to 2000rpm the alternator will produce a surplus enough to recharge the battery, but if the battery is old it does not recharge enough to start your truck

Hi ,we recharged the battery in our magna and idled for about 5 minutes..when we went to drive it kept stopping every time the revs went down ...any ideas thanks larlee australia

Make sure wire conections to alternator are clean and secure. If it's still not charging properly at idle then alternator might need repair. Also make sure engine oil level is okay.

Battery dies while car is running

The alternator is what keeps your car running once it's cranked. It also recharges the battery for the next crank. It's either your alternator can't produce enough power to keep the car running. Your fuel filter is dirty. Your air filter isn't allowing air flow. If it sputters before it dies it could also be the O2 sensor.
