SOURCE: check engine light emission leak
youll have to take it a shop and have them fill the system with "smoke" and examine the entire system for the "smoke". the smoke will pour out from where ever it is leaking from

i have a cobalt too and my car had done the same thing..wut my problem was that my fuse had blown out. look at ur fuse box and there should be one that would be for run or crank, check and make shure those arent blown and if not it may be ur fuel pump..ur car may not be getting enough fuel pressure for it to turn on.

the leak migh be coming from the tranny pan check it out just remove the pan replace the seal and filter and fill it back up it will just take you a trip to the autopart store and 20 minutes to get it fix

Did you get gas shortly before the light came on? It's not uncommon for a loose gas cap to set this code. Take the cap off and look at the seal. If it's cracked replace it with a new OEM cap. If not, reinstall it and make sure it's on all the way. Then you can clear the code and see if it comes back.
