Question about 1998 Mercury Sable
P1744 is a torque convert clutch circuit failure code which appears after the PCM tries to lock up the torque converter and fails on 10 consecutive attempts. You will probably need to replace the "valve body" on the transmission or have a solenoid replaced for your overdrive in your transmission to function properly and for the code to stop being set. I would ONLY recommend taking the vehicle to a transmission shop if you have driveability problems that continue to make the transmission not work normally and you can tell it's not shifting right.
