Question about 1994 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

My boyfriend is trying to install a cd player in my '94 cougar and there's this big grey wire thats taped up with the smaller colored wires. he dicided to cut the little plug thng off of the grey wire and expose these smaller colored wires that's inside of the grey and he doesn't know what ones to connect to the wires for the cd player....i'm wondering if there's any way to fix it?

the plug thing was the part that plugged the wire into the back of the tape-player/radio part, but the plug didn't fit into the wiring harness (i guess is what it's called) that i got for it, and it's labeled for 1990-1997 mercury cougar. and since it didn't fit he just decided to cut the plug off of the grey wire and the wiring harness thing and try to connect the wires together, but the wires are totally different colors and he doesn't know what ones to connect together... i'm guessing the the wirecoming out of the grey one is for the speakers because the ones we already have connected make the cd player come on and work right, there's just no sound

Generally, the way I put an aftermarket cd-player in, is to use a new 'harness adapter' that connects to the old harness and has all of the wires color coded and labeled for easy installation of a new radio using wire nuts. I wouldn't try to cut into the existing harness, without knowing what was what.

What's the 'little plug thing' off of the grey wire?

well where he cut the wire off, he could resplice or resolder the wires of the same colors back together. Hopefully he left a pigtail there on the grey wire.

I don't have the diagrams. Not buying it either. But it is either pink or grey. Anything black is ground. Since 99% of the ones I do is grey, I choose this one. A 94 has 4 wires. Two are ground. one is the fuel pump, the other is the fuel sender/gas gauge. Ground it , then add 12 volts to the others. It won't hurt it. If you won't the wiring schematics, Go to alldatadiy.com ad you can buy them, plus everything else about your car.

run any power wires directly to a post on the fuse block. yellow or orange needs power all the time even with the key off for the memory. the red wire should be on a switched terminal. THe factory radio wires have many other things that may come off them that may effect performance. You can buy a fuse tap at the same location you got the harness, if you need more help just post back, I will watch for any questions.

whatever color they are coming out of your car for example one set is green. choose a color coming out of your cd player to hook up to green. test that if the front left speaker works wrap masking tape around the green wires in car and label front left. do that until you have them all labeled and correct then hook them up according to what you learned. I know it sounds tedious and it is but it's the only way you can figure it out if they are not labeled.

Radio.

First you need to UN DO your first hook up. Put it back the way it was before you splice. You have evendently spliced the wrong wires. Without schematics colors and stripe won't mean anything.

Be thankful you haven't damaged anything or burn something out in your control module.

You need to find the schematic wiring for the radio.

Or if you have a taple player in the radio, by the tape adapter for CD player. Until you can find out what wires PRE AMP the tape player then you can splice.
