Question about 2005 Ford Escape

2 Answers

I noticed when I stopped, that I could smell something in the right rear tire area and it was very warm. My first thought was emergency brake. I have taken the tire off now and the brake pad is tight and the emergency brake cable is released. I'm not sure what to look at and the emergency brake cable seems like it is pulled but I don't know how to release it. Is there something I can do to release it??

Try using super penetrating oil like WD-40 or Liquid Wrench and spray this on the "exterior" of the cable in the vicinity of any "bends" in the cable near the wheel. After liberally applying the super penetrating oil, wait 10 minutes (allow to soak in to break rust free) and then attempt to turn the emergency brake on and off several times to put pressure on the brake and release it. you can also help the spring activated "return" feature of the brake by moving the brake shoe in and out with your hands when parking brake is in the released position. Be careful not to pry on anything delicate...

Why do i have a burning smell by rear tires after i start driving

Maybe the emergency brake is too tight. Or maybe a brake is grabbing, and not releasing. Have it checked right away, cause that is pretty close to the gas tank.

My emergency brake light has come on and stays on along with the little circle that looks like there is water or something on it in the message display...they both come on at the same time when starting...

I'd probably safely raise and support the rear of vehicle, make sure rear wheels turn freely, no braking action unless brakes are applied. You could raise one wheel at a time.
Check the emergency brake release mechanism, the switch and wiring circuit?
My main concern is your not driving down the road with braking action ongoing w/o brakes being applied.
My ex drove 50 miles one time with e-brake not fully released, the brakes were smoking like crazy when she got home. Glad she got home ok. I'm glad it didn't catch fire.

ABS is locked up on rear brakes

Check your brake line going into the caliper and the caliper on the wheel that makes the noise. It's probably a caliper or brake hose. Hope this helps. PHil
