Question about 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan

The hose for the water coolant coming from engine back to radiator is leaking. How involved is it to fix it, hours of labor?

    This is all? My shop told me about it is very involvd, about 3 hours, since they have to remove the a/c unit, recharge it etc., in order to replace the hose.

This is about an hours labor for the job, you will need to be sure the engine is cool and use a pan to collect the coolant so that no animal drinks it as it will kill them, remove the two clamps and take to the parts store and get a replacement install the new hose and add antifreeze, be sure to get air out of system before closing it back up also test the radiator cap to be sure it's not leaking. and you should be good to go.

Ive read the advice given and say yes its not a big job a/c does not come into play with this job and indeed i would be amazed if its takes longar than an hour,try and find the air bleeding screw at the top of the engine, that more important when bleeding the system for air if you cannot find it make sure the air is removed by loosining the top hose[always at the top of engine].adrian,,,,,

Overheating leaking


The overheating probably came from the coolant being too low. The coolant in the reservoir won't go back into the radiator if the coolant in the radiator is too low. Until you get it fixed, check and fill up the radiator every time you want to use it. Overheating is very bad for engines and can cause expensive engine repairs.
Where is it leaking, from the engine or the radiator? You didn't say, but wherever it is leaking is the place to start. If at the radiator, and it is not a loose or leaking hose, I would be looking for a new radiator. If it is leaking at the front of the engine and dripping down from there, you could have a bad water pump. This could be an expensive repair at a shop-not the pump itself-they are not too expensive-but the labor cost in replacing a water pump will add up.

The thermostat would not cause it to leak. But when all is said and done, you will want a new thermostat, after the leak is fixed. They are very cheap and it is just good insurance.

My 2003 regal is running hot and slowly leaking all the coolant out. Can anybody tell me what the problem is?


Yes, you are running hot from leaking all your coolant out. No one can tell you where it is leaking without looking at it. Could be a hose leaking, the radiator, a bad head gasket or intake gasket, the water pump...if coolant is leaking from the front of the engine, that could be the water pump or radiator hose or a water pump gasket. Pretty common for the water pump to leak when it is worn out, that's how you know when to change it.

When you fill the radiator and overflow tank back up to full, does the engine still run hot? If it does, I would not advise running it-have a shop diagnose it before more serious damage occurs. Head gasket repairs can get very expensive-that is the danger you are facing, and if the head gasket has already gone bad from overheating, continued running of the engine can cause you to have to replace the engine. Overheating is a major cause of early engine failure.

Try to determine where the leak is, from where it drips off the engine. The coolant constantly circulates from the engine to the radiator and back into the engine. The heater hoses circulate coolant from the engine to the heater core in the heater case and back into the engine. Besides the overflow tank, these are the only places coolant would be on the car. The engine can leak coolant from a lot of places, but if leaking to the outside, you should be able to spot where it is coming from. Good luck.

Coolant not getting to the radiator & top hose has a leak so taped it up but now blows out of the coolant tap sparaying and steaming and coolant level dropping under half


Thanks but coolant/radiator fans are not coming on at all wonder if this is why coolant sensor letting out all the coolant & water when the enginee gets pressurised. Not sure why they are not coming on and also not when the car came back from a 3 hour trip last night. We changed the water aux pump which seemed to help a bit but water still ls leaking but not as badlyy

Losing a lot of coolant. I don't see a leak. I started to drain the system and it smells burnt to s**t. What might my problem and possible solutions be?

Water pump -- A bad shaft seal will allow coolant to dribble out of the vent hole just under the water pump pulley shaft. If the water pump is a two-piece unit with a backing plate, the gasket between the housing and back cover may be leaking. The gasket or o-ring that seals the pump to the engine front cover on cover-mounted water pumps can also leak coolant. Look for stains, discoloration or liquid coolant on the outside of the water pump or engine.
Radiator -- Radiators can develop leaks around upper or loser hose connections as a result of vibration. The seams where the core is mated to the end tanks is another place where leaks frequently develop, especially on aluminum radiators with plastic end tanks. On copper/brass radiators, leaks typically occur where the cooling tubes in the core are connected or soldered to the core headers. The core itself is also vulnerable to stone damage. Internal corrosion caused by old coolant that has never been changed can also eat through the metal in the radiator, causing it to leak.
Most cooling systems today are designed to operate at 8 to 14 psi. If the radiator can't hold pressure, your engine will overheat and lose coolant.
Hoses -- Cracks, pinholes or splits in a radiator hose or heater hose will leak coolant. A hose leak will usually send a stream of hot coolant spraying out of the hose. A corroded hose connection or a loose or damaged hose clamp may also allow coolant to leak from the end of a hose. Sometimes the leak may only occur once the hose gets hot and the pinhole or crack opens up.

Took out the thermostat, replaced the radiator, the water is circulating in the radiator but it is still running hot. what do i do next?


Overheating can seriously damage a car's engine if left unchecked. Although overheating simply means that a car's engine temperature exceeds normal operating temperatures, the causes of overheating are varied. What follows is a brief list of some of the most common causes of engine overheating.

    Faulty Radiator
  1. A car that overheats will often have a faulty radiator. A radiator is responsible for cooling hot engine coolant that picks up heat from inside a car's running engine. A radiator "radiates" the heat from engine coolant out into the outside air. A faulty radiator loses its "radiating" effects and allows engine coolant to become overheated, thus rendering it ineffective at adequately cooling and engine.
  2. Faulty Water Pump
  3. A faulty or malfunctioning water pump prevents adequate engine coolant flow and can cause a car to overheat. A water pump serves to pressurize and propel engine coolant throughout a car's engine and radiator to increase the heat-reducing capabilities of engine coolant. A faulty water pump loses its ability to adequately pump and propel engine coolant, and can cause a car to overheat.
  4. Coolant System Leaks
  5. A leaky engine coolant system reduces the level of circulating engine coolant, which increases engine temperature and leads to engine overheating. Radiators, water pumps, and coolant system hoses and seals--all of these coolant system parts can develop leaks, which can result in low coolant levels and engine overheating.
  6. Faulty Thermostat
  7. A car thermostat regulates the flow of engine coolant. A thermostat is a heat-sensitive valve that opens when a car engine reaches a set operating temperature and closes when a car engine is cold and warming up. If a thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant will be prevented from reaching the engine, which will quickly lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage.
  8. Low Engine Oil Level
  9. Engine oil, in addition to lubricating an engine's internal parts, helps to keep engine operating temperatures reduced by eliminating friction within the engine. If engine oil levels are low, friction and heat build up inside an engine, a condition that causes increased engine operating temperatures and can lead to engine overheating.

Coolant leaked out; how do i repair?


TO FIX COOLANT LEAK.YOU HAVE TO LOCATE IT.BEST TIME FIND COOLANT LEAK WAIT UNTIL MORNING.ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL IN RADIATOR CORRECT. START THE ENGINE LET IDLE UNTIL START GETTING HOT.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE.COOLANT PRESSURE WILL PUSH COOLANT OUT WHERE LEAKS ARE.CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.CHECK AROUND RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BELOW COOLANT FAN AREA BEHIND RADIATOR.LOOK FOR LEAKS AT RADIATOR CORES AND SIDE CONTAINERS.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND WATER PUMP GASKET OR WEEP HOLE.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND HEATER HOSES AND HEATER CORE.CHECK ENGINE CRANKCASE FOR COOLANT LEAKS.

My car just started to note that I needed to check my coolant level ab out a week ago. I would pour coolant in, and it would leak out. I thought it might of been when the A/C was on, but it was leaking a...


There are a few connections ports that need to be checked. if you cannot find the leak at these places then that happens at the seal of the water pump. When the water pump seal is bad then time to replace the water pump. Why? it is the same labor for the job. Hope that you don't get overheat. This is happening when your water pump is not turning: broken bearings.

Therefore check these following connections first, sometimes the rubber hoses get deteriorated then the clamps need to be tightened to minimize the leak.
1- Upper hose connect to radiator.
2- Lower hose connect to bottom radiator and engine port that is water pump inlets
3- Over flow hose.
4- 2 Heater hoses coming to the fire walls.

Small coolant leak at front of engine hose area, not always maybe 1 out of 5 times driving to work.


If you can narrow down where the leak is coming from, it will be easier for you to fix, but it is most likely either a minor radiator leak, or your water pump. You can put a can of radiator stop leak in your vehicle, such as bars leak. It wont hurt anything. If the leak continues, and appears to be coming from the engine area, the water pump is failing, but also check around the thermostat housing, near where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine

Check your radiator, your transmission cooler is built in you radiator and is leaking in your coolant.I hope this helps you?
