The top radiator hose is the return from the block, The lower radiator hos is the inlet to feed the water pump and block.
Radiators and manufactures us the scientific principal in heat convection, that's to say that heat rises so that when your car is hot and you turn it off the hot water is still able to move freely up and expelled from the block through the thermostat and into the radiator while this pressure also sucks cooled water from the bottom hose back into the block. This will continue until the thermostat closes.

Blowing off transmission lines to radiator


change the radiator if the pipes not screwing in but check the threads on the pipes first .

I need to know which transmission cooling line goes where


If you removed an old radiator and pipes, then fit according to those.

If the old rad and pipes are missing, then first fit the radiator to the vehicle, and then offer up each pipe to the vehicle and see which route is best suited to each pipe, depending on the length and angle of it.

Transmission fluid in radiator could lines be switched


no way you need a new rad to solve this one the internal tube has split or broke ,just disconnect the pipes and seal the rad connections up with a couple of blanking plugs to stop the water leaking out then the transmission pipes you make a nice sort square round out of some copper plumbing pipe and connect this to the transmission pipes from the gearbox run in front the AC rad and this will save you from buying a new rad which the last time i bought one for this motor was about 550 euros as i couldnt one made by a recon company only original part from deal;er

Why is the transmisson fluid leaking by the engine fan


YOU HAVE A COOLER LINE LEAKING EITHER THE STEEL LINE OR RUBBER HOSE THAT GOES FROM THE TRANS TO THE RADIATOR IF YOU HAVE THE RUBBER LINE LEAKING DO NOT USE FUEL LINE TO REPAIR IT AS IT WILL BLOW OUT WITHIN MONTHS USE HYDRALIC LINE

2.2L Engine


  1. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

  2. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
  3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  5. Fill the cooling system.


3.1L Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line from the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
  6. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
  3. Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
  4. Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  6. Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
  9. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

Replace radiator


easy job considering ,i done one a while back but the cost of the radiator was astronomical just over 500 euros ,remove the fan on the back of the radiator ,the top piece of metal over the top of the radiator ,and comes out but the problem i had was with the hoses as they have a sort of push in clamp ,also the oil cooler feed pipes from the auto box and the engine oil cooler pipes ,now the engine oil cooler connections were just screw on but the gearbox cooler pipes have a special plastic retaining clips and these broke on me and the only way i could repair them was to buy new ones which come with the whole pipe from the gearbox and they were very expensive indeed ,also their are a few different versions as well ,all this because of a silly plastic clip .Also i had to unbolt the AC radiator from the main radiator as well .but the hardest part was the gearbox cooler pipes

A water line to the radiator is broken at the radiator. can it be fixed?


A water line, Is it a hose or a little pipe? Is it for water or oil? Either way, a radiator shop can fix it, they can solder it back together. But I've never seen a water line to the radiator, 2 hoses, and 2 transmission cooler lines at the bottom. Once you get away from the radiator, then you have a dozen water lines running all over the place. Hope this helps.

How to change the thermostat


Alero, Grand Am 1999-2005 Thermostat - Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine

  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
  3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat
  7. Clean the mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner.
  6. Fill the cooling system.
  7. Inspect the system for leaks.

Im leaking transmission fluid from what appears to


Make sure you don not run low on transmission fluid in your transmission. Low transmission fluid will cost you a new transmission. You have the transmission line that connects to the upper passenger side or the radiator and the lower passenger side of the radiator. Determine which line has gone bad and you can buy a rubber transmission line hose at most Auto Parts store like Parts Source. Cut off out the section with a pipe cutter that has corroded through and replace with the transmission hose. Make sure you tell them it's a transmission line hose your looking for and don't use any other hose and double clamp with a compression clamps at ether end. If it's the connection at the radiator that has gone bad, replace that end and do that same as you would to sectioning off the the corroded line and try not to have more then 3 inches of repaired section. What ever you do, do not add any stop leak, this will create problems with the shift solenoids and check valves in your valve body in the transmission causing a transmission replacement soon after adding.
