The transmission has solenoids in the trans to make the gears shift correctly. The 1st and 2nd solenoids are not working correctly
I suspect this is the problem. My mechanic has already charged me for a complete rebuild and it didn't solve the problem. He didn't test or replace the solenoids until after he had rebuilt the trans. Now he is saying that the solenoids are the problem. That was the more logical diagnosis from the beginning.

If you mean the shifter will not go into 2nd or 1st gear position, then the problem lies in you shifter itself, and you will have to check the shifter, the linkages, and the shifter cable.
If the transmission will not go into 2nd or 1st gear, then it is an internal problem with the transmission and you will have to have it rebuilt....there are no repairs you can do at home, as the transmission takes some very special tools and equipment to tear down and rebuild.

It is not the linkage to the transmission. It is internal. I am looking for possible diagnosis. Could it possibly be electrical? (solenoids) Sometimes when the engine is cold it will start in 1st and shift thru the gears properly. This usually lasts only 1 block before there will be a "clunk". After that only 3rd and 4th gear will be available. Even after the engine is turned off and restarted it will only drive in 3rd and 4th gear until it is turned off and allowed to cool completely. Then it will engage in 1st for a short time until the dreaded "clunk". The fact that it will engage in 1st and 2nd gear at all tells me that these gears are probably OK and that the problem lies with whatever causes the transmission to shift.
I think you hit it on the nail head.
