REPLACED 1 OF THE OXYGEN SENSORS, CHANGED PLUGS, PLUG WIRES, OIL AND FILTER, ALSO REPLACED AIR FILTER AND CLEANED PCV FILTER, RESET PC AND IT RAN GOOD UNTIL WARMED UP (check engine light back on). Sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.

There are a multitude of things that could result in a PO171 trouble code.
It might be the infamous PCV elbow problem.. Around 100K miles 5.4's are bad to rot out the PCV elbow on the back of the throttle body, this will cause bad idling problems and will throw lean codes when it gets really bad.
Find the PCV valve in the passengers side valve cover and trace the tube around to the back of the throttle body. With the engine running feel around the rubber elbow and see if you have a vacuum leak.

Here are some other things to try:
1. call your local dealer and ask them what it could be
2. Replace the front two Oxygen sensors.
3. Clean MAF sensor (especially if you've installed a K/N filter - could coat the wires with oil that collects dust).
4. Check/change air filter
5. Change the fuel filter (under drivers side frame)
6. Check fuel pressure

Tried getting ford f150 4.2 2003 inspected. Replaced air filter and fuel filter already. Check engine lit was on before replacing them . Now check engine light is out . But won't pass inspection.

Last week I had the very same catalyst, evap and ECG codes come up on my 1999 Mercury Mystique which is like a Ford Taurus. A friend was able to find a hole or leak in the hose connected, replaced it and it runs fine. I havent run it a full and straight 50 miles yet to clear the check engine light but that repair alone changed the entire way the car was poorly driving. Im sure that hasnt fixed all the probs but thats a good starting point.

You cannot have even the slightest exhaust leak between the engine and the oxygen sensors or you will see this code.Also make sure the air flow sensor is clean.

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 has detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1. The P0171 is one of the more common trouble codes.
This code is triggered by the first downstream (front) O2 sensor. The sensor provides a reading of the air:fuel ratio leaving the engine's cylinders, and the vehiclesicon1.png powertrain/engine control module (PCM/ECM) uses that reading and adjusts to keep the engine running at that optimum ratio of 14.7:1. If something is not right and the PCM cannot maintain the 14.7:1 ratio, but rather there is too much air, it triggers this code.
A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty
    Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
  • There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor
  • Possible cracked vacuum or PCV line/connection
  • Faulty or stuck open PCV valve
  • Failed or faulty oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 1)
  • Sticking/plugged or failed fuel injector
  • Low fuel pressure (possible plugged/dirty fuel filter!)
  • Exhaust leak between engine and first oxygen sensor
lot of times, cleaning the MAF sensor and finding/fixing vacuum leaks fix the problem. If you're on a tight budget, start there, but that may not be the fix for certain. So, possible solutions include:
  • Clean the MAF sensor. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace/repair as required
  • Inspect all hoses and connections in the air intake system
  • Inspect and/or test the intake manifold gaskets for leakage
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure
  • Ideally you'll want to monitor short and long term fuel trims using an advanced scan tool

Code Po171 indicates a lean condition on cylinder bank #1 of the engine. This is the drivers side of the engine. I would suggest replacing both front oxygen sensors as a pair to start. An oxygen sensor has a life span of about 5 years and yours are now 9 years old if they are original. When they get older they are slow to respond to changes in the oxygen content of the exhaust and can trigger a code Po171. If you continue to have the same code set after the replacement of both oxygen sensors then it is time to find out why your engine is running lean. Some of the most common causes are an ignition misfire and a vacuum leak. I have also seen Fords EGR flow sensor (known by Ford as Delta Pressure Feedback sensor) to cause problems like that as well. A good mechanic with a scan tool can usually spot a problem like that in a few minutes.

po301 thru po306 all misfire codes cylinder 1-6 remove plugs and replace them..... set the plug gap first
i suggest u replace the wires also if they never been replaced all these misfire codes can set the others and one is for the oxygen sensor ( 02s or HO2S) CIRCUT MALFUNCTION do u know how to check wireing systems
do the tune up plugs (set gap) .052-.056 change the fuel filter also. clear the codes hows it run
this info is for 98 E-250 4.2Litre
what engine do u have 4.2L or 4.6L i know it is a v-6 by the codes
