Question about BMW 318

1 Answer

BMW (1996) e36 318i ABS fault. The ABS fault light stays on which means that the ABS system is deactivated. The diagnostic check when the car was serviced was that the front left brake sensor was faulty and so we had this replaced however when the fault is reset on the onboard computer it comes back on after driving a short distance. The workshop (not BMW) says the ECU is at fault. Could this problem not be one of the 2 ABS relays in the fuse box?

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Yes you are absolutely right this issue might be due to relays. This is a common issue in E36 and Z3 models manufactured prior to May 1996. It may also show an error code 145 which means that the pump is inoperable and the most probable cause is faulty relays and not any other component. You’ll need to use the DIS tester to confirm that fault code 145 is set in the ABS control unit. The gray ABS pump motor relay located near the left side of engine compartment in the power distribution box will be required to be replaced. If still the issue is not resolved then you’ll need to replace the ABS pump. Please make sure to disconnect the battery before the repair and reconnect it after you bled the brakes. This way you'll know the valve is still open so you'll be able to bleed the brakes as you would normally do. Then reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition and the light should go. The ABS will now work perfectly. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Alarm deactivates but car wont start, orange key on dash

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS, MIL, CEL and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Legend of Abbreviations. ABS Anti-lock brake system. TCS Traction control system, TCM Transmission control module, SRS Supplemental restraint system, BCM Body control module. TPMS Tire Pressure Monitor System, MIL Malfunction Indicator Lamp, CEL Check Engine Light.

Bmw 520i 1999 abs/asc lights on diagnostic

Check to see if your brake pads and rotors are in good condition. Or if you have replaced the pads yourself and have not reset the wheel sensors this would cause the ABS Antilock Brake System light and the ASC Automatic Stability Control light to stay on as the ASC uses the ABS brakes with computer assistance to control the car

Dcs and abs light staying on

car is sensing a problem with the stability control system (DSC) or the antilock brake system (ABS). usually an ABS problem will turn off the DSC, so DSC may be ok, just ABS needs a look at.

since its an '08 model, it should still be covered by the BMW warranty provided you live in the USA. take it in and have them fix it. not safe driving with both systems deactivated.
