I have a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta that the hazard lights are flashing and wont start. we were told that it was the alarm system. we just bought this car yesterday. we have tried putting the key in the driver door lock and turning off and on several times. STill no luck. We also have tried all the locks. There is a after market radio in the car so no code can be put in. Please help.

Try putting the key in the door and turn the key to lock the door twice quickly to lock all doors then turn it to unlock the doors twice quickly to unlock all the doors. Then if that doesnt work check all the doors, trunk, and hood for the push button sensors that enable the theft deterent system make sure the buttons move in and out smoothly and are not sticking.

This is in case that the link doesn't work
It will not start because the alarm is activated and you have to bypass the alarm system to get your car started if you don't mind to have an alarm unless you have the alarm remotes. Just look for the alarm module that is on the left under the dash on the driver side right behind the headlight switch and unplug the two harness connectors, one has a 10 wire connector and the other 6 wires this is the one that you are going to work with. look for the 2 thicker wires on one side (they are the only 2 thicker wires in that connector and they are on top of the other) one is red and the other is red with a stripe those 2 wires are the starter wires and they have to be connected together. The car will start and everything will work fine but you will not have an alarm until you can get new remotes or whatever your case might be.

SOURCE: 02 VW Jetta locks, remote, lights, windows stopped working

Same problem with an '03 Golf--remote entry, power windows, and interior lights stopped working. This was easily fixed by replacing fuse #14, (10 amp), located in the driver's side fuse block.

SOURCE: the driver side door lock broke on my 98 jetta door want open

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

What panic alarm? A red flashing light in the middle of the instrument panel? Why, that's the antilock brake system. type in vw instrument warning lights in the search bar and read on it.

No blinkers/hazards and brake lights won't go off

Did you check the blinkers relay? Tray to get one used at a junk yard or local Autozone and make sure you save the receipt. Install and test.

Hazard lights wont stop flashing and car wont turn over.

unlock driver door twice consecutively because that's how u disarm the car alarm. As for the radio, input the code that's in ur booklet. If u don't have it, call ur local dealer with the car's serial number and they will give u the radio code. It's 4 digits.
