Question about 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

On a 2003 Town & Country, it was shifting hard into first gear. Mileage 135,000 Sometimes it would act like it was cutting out and could not decide what gear to shift in. I took it in and had the transmission fluid and filter changed. It still does the same thing. It seems to shift hard when starting out slow.

When was your last tune up? with that kind of mileage it could be possible that the transmission itself has wear and tear that a fluid and filter will not help. How does the car idle etc. Have you had the problem diagnosed by a professional mechanic at all?
Thank you,
Lee

I am not sure about the tune up, I just bought it recently. It does run fine and it does idle fine. The people I bought it from apparantly live in the country, so I was thinking maybe something related to collecting dust. The mechanic I took it to is semi-professional. It has not been diagnosed from a transmission shop. I was trying to avoid to additional cost, if it is something I can get fixed. It shifts into the other gears smmothly and fine. Just when I start out. Not always but frequently it shifts hard.

Well the solenoid packs are known to wear out on these vehicles and just that one could be worn out and is what is causing your problem. I would have that looked at and its about a 100$ part. If you need more information let me know.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Rough shifting can be caused by a failing or worn out Throttle Position Sensor. This was the case with my 2003 T & C. 150,000 miles. All other on line forums pointed to anything from wiring harnesses to TCMs to the transmission itself. Error codes were of no help. Observation of the vehicle operation over time lead to this diagnosis and successful repair!

2003 town & country wont go into drive

If fluid and filter hasn't been changed then I would definately try that first. BE SURE, they replace fluid with MOPAR only from dealer. Chrysler transmissions are very particular about fluid, even though mechanic will tell you it's all the same, it isn't. Seen it happen time and time again where transmission acts up after fluid change of "same stuff", different brand. Then added cost of changing fluid again to MOPAR and all was well.

Shifting from first gear to the next one. very sluggish, mechanic said there was a couple of sensors that needed replacing. can you tell me what a new transmission costs? a 2003 town & country.

you mean from dealer or aftermarket. aftermarket in the 2 to 3 thousand dollar area. be careful and be sure to use reputable shop as this transmission has lots of problems an some shops will blame problems on external electronics while under there warr. might even get 2 or 3 opinions.

96 chrysler town country wont shift into third gear

If it starts out in 2nd gear & dosn't shift, it is probably in a limp in mode. the system will need to be diagnosed & computer satisfied. sometimes disconnecting the battery will reset the computer & allow the trans to shift untill it sees the problem again. I recomend getting the codes read first so the memory will not be erased.
