Question about 2000 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

2000 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3L Engine. few months ago I had coolant boiling over my surge tank. Initially the radiator cap lost its proper pressure capability but it wasn't the case but notice radiator had small leak so replaced it and I though everything was good to go but recently notice my surge tank was empty and radiator coolant was low so I looked around and notice intake manifold gasket had wet spot or seepage indication but mind boggling is that seepage can make surge tang go empty... I know I have to replace intake manifold gasket soon so I need to know what gasket do I need to order to do this job? I know I need to get intake manifold gasket and valve cover gasket and what else do I need to have on hand before I start tackling the job..... I don't want to run into needing other gasket or parts after I start the job because I and in the overseas in the military were I cannot get to auto park store to get what I need alike in states. Any good advise will greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Song.

You can purchase an intake manifold gasket set from a local parts store. It should have the upper and lower intake gaskets contained in it. I see you plan on doing the valve cover gaskets as well. It might be a good idea to replace the plugs and wires at the same time to save some trouble down the road. I would recommend doing the oil change and change the thermostat at the same time as well.

SOURCE: replace valve cover gasket

I have the same problem on a 2003 Town & Country. The cover for the front 3 cylinders is quite straight forward, but in order to do the rear cylinders I believe you are going to have to remove the cowling below the windshield. You will need a gear puller to remover the windshield wipers first, then remove the cowling. Than should give you more room to work. It's still not going to be easy, but it sure beats paying hundreds of $$$$ in labor charges.

I do not have the solution for you but I will make a suggestion if you do not get an answer from someone else. Find a 2000 Dodge Caravan like yours at a used car lot and pop the hood and take a look. That may be your quickest solution.

How do you bleed the air from the cooling system of a 1999 v6 pontiac grand am

Refilling Procedure

Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL?"¢ is added to the system, the engine coolant will require change sooner: at 50 000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.

  1. Close the radiator drain cock.

  2. If previously removed, install the engine block drain plugs.

  3. When installing the drain plugs, use pipe sealer GM P/N 12346004.

Important: On vehicles equipped with the 3.4L engine, open the coolant air bleed valve. The coolant air bleed valve is located on the top of the thermostat bypass pipe/heater pipe assembly. Close the valve once a continuous stream of coolant is expelled from the valve.

  4. Fill the surge tank to the base of the filler neck.

  5. Start the engine with the pressure cap off. Run the engine until the upper radiator hose starts to get hot.

  6. If the coolant level in the surge tank is low, add the proper mix of coolant until the level reaches the full cold line.

  7. Important: After servicing the cooling system, and if the vehicle is equipped with an intermittent low coolant light, an occasional low coolant light may be encountered during some extreme driving maneuvers. This complaint should be eliminated by removing the surge tank cap and adding coolant to a level just at or above the full cold line when the system is cold.

  8. Install the cap onto the tank with hand tight pressure.

Recycling Procedure

Important: Dispose of used coolant in a proper fashion, such as in a used coolant holding tank. Never pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is a very toxic chemical. Disposing of ethylene glycol antifreeze into the sewer system is both illegal and ecologically unsound.

There is currently no approved method for recycling used DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant into new DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant can be recycled into new conventional coolant. Consult local listings for coolant recycling facilities in your area.

Could be a defective radiator cap, or a leaking head gasket.

My Dodge 2005 Ram overheats on hot days while running the AC. If I turn the heater on then it cools down. I need to know if this is a thermostat problem or if something else.

I see your post was a while ago. I hope this helps you or anyone ells having Dodge over heating issues.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 and a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. I also owned a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. ALL of them had thermostat issues. When you replace the thermostat make certain you get the proper heat rating. If it is rated tool low, then the check engine light will trigger the code that the engine is not heating up fast enough. I also recommend going with a 'fail-safe' thermostat. These thermostats fail OPEN rather than closed. My 2002 RAM factory thermostat failed closed, built up pressure, then blew half the water out from under the radiator cap. This happened in less than 35k miles. The dealer replaced it. After a couple of years it failed again. Make sure you have 50/50 mix of anti freeze to water. This raises the boiling point of the water, makes it more efficient for cooling the engine, treats the water so it does not corrode and scale up the cooling system and helps keep the liquid from boiling off there by reducing the volume of fluid in the cooling system. Also, BOTH my 02 RAM and 05 caravan developed a leak in their radiators. They were slow leaks and I did not notice it until I did some standard checks and found the coolant was low, Most shops can run a pressure test for less than $40 to let you know if your radiator is leaking.

You should also make sure that your AC cooling fans is running. There are fuses and solenoids in the fuse box that can sometimes go out. When you AC is on this fans will turn on. If not, it could create a lot of extra heat.

2002 Caravan,3.3 V6,FWD,had a loose rad cap and lost fluids till no heat in heater.Replaced cap, filled overflow reservoir, ran for a few kms, refilled tank.Still no heat unless motor revs, all levels are...

You still have a lot of air in the cooling system and you have to speed up the water pump to get any coolant to flow through the heater. Let the engine cool off, then open the radiator cap and top off the radiator. Pour the coolant in at a rate slow enough to let the air bubble up without splashing the coolant back out. Once you get the coolant level up to the top overflow hose, the remaining air will be pushed out by expansion through the overflow tank once the engine gets hot, and will be replaced by coolant from the tank on cool-down.

I realise my engine lights comes on high coolant temp and when i opened the hood ,the coolant was dripping from the container you fill it at,can you please tell me possible problems

Depending on your system (either sealled radiator without a cap and a pressurized surge tank or standard radiator with cap and an overflow tank) either the radiator/surge tank cap is not holding pressure and the coolant is unable to pressurized and boils at a lower temp, boiling off until you coolant level is so low the engine overheats. More than likely it is either the thermostat or water pump. Commonly it is the thermostat

Over boiling problem while temperature guage remains normal.

Replace the thermostat. The Thermostat is not functioning correctly. It is closed = not allowing the radiator fluid to flow when the engine is cold. When the Thermostat reaches a certain temperature, it is suppose to open = allowing the radiator fluid to flow.
Your Thermostat is not opening, causing the engine fluid to reach boiling point. When this happens, the sheer pressure will 'blow' boiling radiator fluid out the radiator cap. The Radiator Cap is designed to do this if operating properly.
Change that Thermostat and the over boiling should disappear. And yes it is something you can do yourself without much problem.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel free to contact me at FixYa.com!
Please include your engine size on any additional information or questions..Thanks,

Where is the drain valve on 2002 dodge caravan radiator?

its a pitcock facing the cab bottom of the radiator, plastic flat. once you find the pitcock just put a bucket underneath and turn it.then refill. if you want to flush(run fluid thru to clean it out) the radiator id suggest taking it in. you dont have to flush it every time you change the coolant out.
