Question about 1990 Volkswagen Jetta

When i try 2 start the car it cranks but it does not turn on i checked the spark plugs the trimming belt pretty much everything can it be the distributor

Can very easily be distributor, remove the cap and check to see if the roter or tips on the cap are corroded or burnt

Pull a spark plug, ground it to the metal engine somewhere, keep it plugged into the spark plug wire. disconnect the other spark plug wires so it doesn't start. Turn the car over (try to start it) and see if the one spark plug fires. Do not touch it or hold it while trying this. They use about 30,000 volts. You just confirmed one of the 3 requirements for starting: fuel, compression and spark. If you smell fuel anywhere but the exhaust, don't try this as the spark from the spark plug can ignite fuel or fumes in the engine compartment. If your spark plug fired ok, check to make sure the timing belt did not break. Sometimes you can pry the plastic cover open a bit over the cam gears, or sometimes there is an inspection hole, or you can look into your oil fill hole to see if the cam is turning (as the timing belt turns the cams). I modify everything I have to make it more user friendly. Nothing is perfect but faith and even that can be improved.

My 91 Acura legond moter cranks over but won't start


Engines need 3 things to run-spark, compression and fuel/air. Check the simplest things first. When you turn the key and the warning lights come on, does the check engine light come on? It should turn off in 6 seconds, if everything's ok. I Check the air filter, make sure it isn't plugged up. Take off the oil fill cap, and look in. I believe you can see the rocker/cam, use a flashlight. Have someone crank the engine with the key, see if the cam turns, rocker moves. If not, broken timing belt. Next remove an igniter, put a plug in it, have it plugged in and hold the plug near a ground. Have it cranked, check for spark. If no spark, it needs more professional diagnostics. If yes, Fuel is left. If you sit in the drivers seat, windows up and quiet, turn the key to run, all the warning lights come on. The fuel pump runs for 2 seconds, a low hum from the back. You can usually here it if it is quiet around you. (Just because it makes noise, doesn't mean it's good.) Your car also has a main relay that powers the fuel pump, a common failure. Last thing to try is starting fluid sprayed into the throttle, throttle open 1/2 way, while someone cranks.
One of these should lead you to the failure. Note: the main relay is powered by the ignition system, except for that initial 2 seconds. So if there is no spark, the fuel pump won't work either.

2000 Toyota Sienna won't start. No spark


I parked my 04 sienna and cut it off 2 hrs latter I tried to start it and would not crank starter was fried replaced with new one now it crank but will not start I tried starting fluid same thing cecked fire to plugs fire once and quit until you turn key agin fire once agin replaced cam and crank senser no start what am I missing anyone thank ,lost..

My car won't start. Trys to turn over, battery isn't dead


when it tries to turn over does it crank freely? does it cough and backfire? How many miles on this car? before you sit and crank on this you should check the timing belt for anything like belt loose bad pulleys, check connections at starter for corrosion or loose connection,as well as batt connection and cables. did this run fine and the next time you tried to start it failed ? Has it done this a couple times before but started and got worse till now? after you make sure belt and idlers are satisfactory,check starter for operation,then check fuel supply,then check spark plugs for spark. BUT,before you perform any checks, hook a battery charger up to battery and charge while doing inspection and tests.

check the timing and spark, chains and belts like jumping in the cold as everything is stiff and doesn't want to turn,if your timing has jumped or slipped that would cause it. so first check if you have spark when you crank the engine,some cars if you disconnect a plug wire it shuts off the spark,see what method your car has for checking for spark.. start there.

Starting problem with honda civic


Next things to check are fuel and spark, remove a spark plug and with the wire attached crank the motor, if you see spark in the plug then it's not a spark issue and probably a fuel problem. If there is no spark could be bad plugs or wires, or distrubitor cap. To check fuel remove injector cover and crank motor, if there is no fuel coming out then check fuel filter, fuel pump.

Hi there, I have a 1990 Volkswagen Jetta Flair 2. I've had the car for about a year now and overall it's been an excellent car for it's age. However, there's always something that needs to be fixed and lately I've had throttle response problems. I do not have any mechanical backround, so I will describe it as best as I can. For one, it seems apparent this is an issue when the engine is cold (or not sitting in the sun all day). I will put the foot down, and it won't respond until it gets to about 3000rpm (right around when I'm thinking about changing gears), and then it rocket ships forward. Before it finally responds, there's a lot of shaking going on in the engine bay. It doesn't sound pleasant either. I took it in for an oil change, and they put fuel injector in it and it seemed to be a temporary solution. Whatever the case, there's a poor connection between me putting the throttle down and the car responding to the action. I do rev it up before I get going, but it's kind of futile. So as a result, I have a tendency to stall in first gear at low speeds as the gas doesn't react when I want it to, and the clutch is usually released by that point. After about 5-10 minutes of constant driving, it will accelerate smoothly. If you can point me in the right direction, whether it's "fuel" related, or it's some sort of heat sensor (I have no idea what I'm talking about), let me know if you've had similar experiences. All my repairs have cost me less than a 100 each time, I want to keep it that way.
