2000 z3... gears grind slightly when shifting between 1st & 2nd. I was told synchro ring needs replacing...does that sound like a likely cause?

2008 toyota Camry manual hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

With the engine off see if the shift between 1st to 2nd feel,s free if not it could be the cable check the clutch is disengageing all the way it should go into reverse without crunching, other then that it could be a synchro ring worn check that the gearbox has the right oil in it.

I have a 1988 Corvette with a 700R4, not wanting to shift from 1st. to 2nd. unless I leave my foot off the gas for it to shift. Contact mac1212sr@aol.com

Transmissions have "synchros" that adjust the speed when shifting from one gear to the next, because the engine's RPMs, while correct for, say, 1st gear, are too high to shift to 2nd gear.

If you're really careful, and an expert driver, you can shift a manual transmission from one gear to the next without using the clutch at all.

However, you seem to have a transmission problem with the 1-2 synchros.

1995 volvo 940 hard shift betwen 1st and 2nd gear

You will have to strip the box and check the syncro''s on the gears . It sounds like a broken synchro ring.

Grinds when going into second gear if your at a high rpm.

Check that you are using the correct grade of oil in the gear box. IF you have it is possible that the synchro ring for 2nd gear is failing and not energising the 2nd gear hub. That means box out for a rebuild

My '03 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T Manual Trans grinds when shifting into second gear?

the synchros are not DIY, when they start to go it will grind when the RPMs are higher like getting on a highway, you can try double clutching and see if that helps.

I changed the transmission fluid in my 1996 cabrio and now it will not shift out of 2nd gear any suggestions?

Hi there,

First of all, does it grind when double clutch? If it doesn't, then the synchro is either trashed or the clutch is not working properly. Linear touched on the problem about the gap in gearing. 1st-2nd has the largest change in ratio so the synchros have the hardest job to do there. If the clutch isn't working properly, it will make the synchros job harder and possibly push it outside their tolerance, while the other gears are less drastic so it doesn't cause a problem.

I'd advise you take it to a dealer to fix it.

Good luck!

Hi, I am driving a Fiat Sciento 1000, year 2000 - I am struggling at times getting into gear from 1st to 2nd especially, and sometimes end up hazards on until i've got into gear ok.

If the clutch feels strong and it is only happening on 1 or 2 gears, this is likely going to be caused by worn synchros in the transmission. What these items are, little brass rings, shaped like gears themselves that go on the gear shafts and help to align the gear so the shift fork can easily push the other gear into place. If these are worn or broken, you get gears that do not align and grind when use is needed. The transmission will need to be removed and taken apart to determine how much damage is there. This is not a rebuild, but do let an expert give you his opinion about what NEEDS to be done while it is on the bench. Let me know if you need anything else. Unfortunately, I do not have a shop manual for this particular model.

1994 325 BMW shifting from 1st - 2nd gear is hard and grinding noise, does this indicate a posssible issue wth the gear box, clutch, or .......

unfortunately yes it does.its sounds like your 2nd gear synchro is out.unfortunately your tranny needs to come out to fix it.does it only between 1-2? or other gears? if all gears your cutch is goin but just between 2 specific gears a synchro times the gear teeth so they lock in and its off and teeth on the gears are the grinding you are hearing.sorry to have to tell yah that one.i always loved my old 325 is model always fun to drive.

Grinds into 2nd gear and sometimes won't go into 2nd gear. Also noise in 1st gear

sounds like the synchro mesh is shot, look at rebuilt transmission , usually cheaper than the gears them selves.

Trouble shifting gears. Gears grinding while shifting from 1st to 2nd. Also cannot down shift from 2nd to 1st unless going less than 10 mph

YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR TRANS OUT AND HAVE IT REBUILT, THE SYNCHROS ARE WORN OUT!!
THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE TROUBLE SHIFTING GEARS!!
