I read that the firing order was '1,2,3,4,5,6' which is easy to remember: prev.gif next.gif FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. How do i set timing on 1998 chevy truck 350 vortec

number 1 plug wire should be pointing towards the front drivers corner . drivers side piston order is 1-3-5-7 front to back .passengers side front to back is 2-4-6-8 then the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 . if you pull the # 1 spark plug and put your finger in the hole /remover power wire while doing this at the dist.bump the engine when you feel a rush of air that's the compression stroke when the piston is at the top of it's compression stroke . pop the cap look to make sure the rotor is pointing at the # 1 piston roughly and place cap back on so the # 1 terminal is over the wire end of the rotor contact tip and work clockwise around with the firing order and hope this helps .if it still dont want to run then you may have jumped timing chain or stretched they will jump out of time and cause a headache.

Spark plugs

Firing order for the 4.0L 6-cylinder is as follows:

1-5-3-6-2-4

As for the spark plugs, it looks like the Autolite AL 985 plugs are what you need. If you are going to replace the plugs, might as well also replace the plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor (if you have those, I dont recall which year they went to the distributorless ignition).
