Question about 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

2 Answers

I have a 97 Malibu, the car is making a rattling sound plus it is difficult to steer. The power steering pump was just replaced and the fluid level is fine. I looked at the belt - it looks like it is falling off the wheel. Not only does it make a rattling noise, but it also creates a burning smell and a bit of smoke by the belt. What can I do to fix this?

Either the belt is completely worn or there is a problem in the rack which is preventing the fluid from moving through it if this has been happening sense the pump was changed I would say the problem here already burnt out one pump, and running it like that could very easily burn out that pump as well. most likely, you will need to replace your rack and pinion..

Steering gets stiff when turing

Sounds like your power steering pump is acting up. Check for steering fluid level and make sure it is at proper level. If that doesn't help or the fluid is really old, consider flushing the power steering system. It is not very difficult to do. Makes it easier if you have someone to help. There are great deal of online videos on how to flush a power steering system. If that doesn't fix your problem, then it may just be the time to replace your power steering.

check your power steering: for leaks and also the tightness of the belt. More then likely the belt or the pulley on the power steering is the problem, Tim

If power steering pump is leaking your options are: replace w/new or rebuilt or have yours rebuilt.
They make stop leak for pwr steering units but it's a very temporary fix. In answer to "driving it" - it's at your own risk - if it locks up then there's possibility of an accident. I'd get it fixed and be done w/the worries. Have a reputable shop look at it and give you an estimate.

Check the Power steering fluid for it will be noisy if low. The tensioner works off a very strong spring so if your belt is on it was not the mechcanics fault unless he nicked a hole in the power steering line somewhere. Check for leaks as well

A whirring sound, maybe power steering pump

HI. You power steering fluid level may be low at this point, a quick inspection of the fluid level, will be in order, if possible. Once you have verified that the fluid level is sufficient, move on to the actual power steering belt and unit. Make sure the belt is tight, and rotating the pulley. If the fluid level is low, be sure to fill to specifications.

Now, If the pulley and belt are rotating without a wobble, and the fluid level is sufficient, this will lead to a failed pump. The pump should be replaced in this case. Make sure you exhaust all inspections points mentioned before replacing the pump.

CHECK LIST

  1. Check the power steering pump hoses for leaks
  2. Check the power steering pump pulley for lose fit or wobble during rotation,
  3. Check the power steering reservoir for proper level(add if needed)
  4. Check the power steering drive belt for the proper tension.

Check the operation of the power steering system.
Check the power steer drive pump belt is ok,
Check fluid level of Pwr steer pump is ok.
No oil leaks should be evident on the power steer system.
